Crowd and Social media has clearly hit the global mainstream in the developed world, providing reason to believe that designing engagement around social media is becoming an increasingly normal path. Here are the three key points:

It’s growing fast: Two-thirds of the developed-world’s Internet population visit a social network or blogging site and the sector now accounts for almost 10% of all internet time. ‘Member communities’ (social networking and blogging) has overtaken personal Email to become the world’s fourth most popular online sector after search, portals and software applications. Time spent on social network and blogging sites is growing at over three times the rate of overall Internet-usage growth, and in most countries the percentage of Internet time spent on social networks has doubled

It’s going global: ‘Member Communities’ has taken a foothold in every major market from 50% of the online population in Switzerland and Germany to 80% in Brazil. Facebook has become the largest player on the global stage, dominant in many countries, yet localized offerings have won the day in many others.

It’s growing up: Reflecting the other data we’ve seen here recently, Facebook’s greatest growth in global audience numbers as come from ages 35-49 and also enjoyed strong growth from the 50-64 segment.

NowPublic is a participatory news network which mobilizes an army of reporters to cover the events that define our world. The company has become one of the fastest growing news organizations with thousands of reporters in over 140 countries. During Hurricane Katrina, NowPublic had more reporters in the affected area than most news organizations have on their entire staff. In 2007, TIME Magazine named NowPublic one of the 50 Coolest Websites and in 2009, the site was nominated for an Emmy for Advanced Technology.

Digg is a place for people to discover and share content found on the web. From the biggest online destination to the most obscure blog, Digg surfaces the best stuff as voted on by our users. You won’t find editors at Digg — we’re here to provide a place where people collectively determine the value of content. In doing so, we’re changing the way people consume information online.

Recently, A Nepal Based Company, “Surfmandu” has Lauched its Own “Collaborative Concept of Nowpublic and Digg” Buzzda.com .

Buzzda is Open To whole World ! Whats Buzzing aroung the World?,Discover the best news and all other content on the web submitted by all the people around the world .

Buzzda is Highly inspired by a Popular Citizen Journalism website “Nowpublic” and “Digg“

“Today, we’re excited to launch the first @earlybird Exclusive Offer, in partnership with The Walt Disney Studios,” the site said. “For a limited time, @earlybird followers in the U.S. can get a special deal on tickets for “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” a new feature film from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films that opens in theaters today.”

TechSaver will be following @earlybird, but if you’re looking for deals on non-TechSaver products, make sure to follow the new account, too. Sorry, but we won’t be writing about sales on fashion or beauty products.

The Like button enables users to make connections to your pages and share content back to their friends on Facebook with one click. Since the content is hosted by Facebook, the button can display personalized content whether or not the user has logged into your site. For logged-in Facebook users, the button is personalized to highlight friends who have also liked the page.

The basic Like button is available via a simple iframe you can drop into your page easily. A fuller-featured Like button is available via the
<fb:like>
XFBML tag (which requires you use the new JavaScript SDK). The XFBML version allows users to add a comment to their like as it is posted back to Facebook. The XFBML version also dynamically sizes its height; for example, if there are no profile pictures to display, the plugin will only be tall enough for the button itself.

If your web pages represent profiles of real-world things — things like movies, sports teams, celebrities, and restaurants, you can optionally use the Open Graph protocol to enable users to establish lasting connections to your pages. Your pages show up in more places on Facebook and you gain the ability to publish stream stories to connected users.

Facebook is battling a lawsuit filed by a New York man who claims he owns 84 percent of the social-networking company.

Paul D. Ceglia of Wellsville, N.Y., claims in a lawsuit (see below) that he entered into a contract with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in 2003 to design and develop a Web site that would ultimately become the social-networking giant. The contract entitled Ceglia to a $1,000 fee and a 50 percent stake in the final product, which eventually launched as TheFacebook.com, according to the suit, which was filed in the Supreme Court of New York’s Allegany County on June 30.

The suit also claims Zuckerberg agreed to pay Ceglia an additional 1 percent stake per day until the Web site is completed, giving Ceglia an 84 percent stake in the company as of February 4, 2004.

Judge Thomas Brown issued a temporary restraining order blocking any transfer of assets earlier this month after Facebook requested the case be dismissed.

Privately held Facebook dismissed the suit as frivolous.

“We believe this suit is completely frivolous and we will fight it vigorously,” Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt said in a statement.

The company, which has nearly 500 million users, is estimated to be worth $6.5 billion after receiving a $200 million investment from the Russian firm Digital Sky Technologies in 2009. Zuckerberg’s fortune was estimated by Forbes magazine earlier this year to be $4 billion.

In 2009, New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo obtained a restraining order against Allegany Pellets, a western New York wood pellet company owned by Ceglia and his wife Iasia. Cuomo accused the company of defrauding consumers by taking $200,000 in orders but not delivering any products or issuing any refunds. That case is reportedly ongoing.

Ceglia did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

Today, we are launching another way for people to access Facebook anytime, anywhere: 0.facebook.com. 0.facebook.com is a new mobile site that includes all of the key features of Facebook but is optimized for speed. It initially is available through more than 50 mobile operators in 45 countries and territories with zero data charges.

Collaborating with operators from around the world, we developed this new mobile site with two main attributes:

It’s fast: 0.facebook.com includes all the key features of our standard mobile site m.facebook.com. Users can update their status, view their News Feed, like or comment on posts, send and reply to messages, or write on their friends’ Wall just as they do on Facebook.com. Rather than making photos viewable on 0.facebook.com, we put the photos one click away so they don’t slow down the experience. You can still view any photos on Facebook if you want but your regular data fees will apply.

It’s free: Thanks to the help of mobile operators we collaborated with, people can access 0.facebook.com without any data charges. Using 0.facebook.com is completely free. People will only pay for data charges when they view photos or when they leave 0.facebook.com to browse other mobile sites. When they click to view a photo or browse another mobile site a notification page will appear to confirm that they will be charged if they want to leave 0.facebook.com

Facebook has added a new feature to our News Feeds. When you hover your mouse over a name or a website, additional information pops up in a small box. This rollover action appears to make it easier to find out information about people and websites, as well as send messages or add new friends with only a single click. What do you think about this new feature?

When hovering over a friend’s name, the box includes a larger profile picture than the small thumbnail in the News Feed, their network, the number of mutual friends between you and six random profile pictures of these friends, as well as the option to send them a message. If the name you’re hovering over is not a friend, all of this information will be available as well as the option to add them with a click. Hover over a website, and you’ll see how many people like it in total, as well as how many of your friends like it.

We explored our News Feeds to see where the popup was appearing and found some interesting things. The popup appears on groups that your friends are joining, and includes the total number of people in the group. Events will show how many people are attending in total, how many of your friends are attending, and gives you the option to RSVP at the bottom of the popup. Pages that appear in your News Feed display the number of likes they have in total and how many of your friends like.

We are still exploring this new feature, and we’ll have more information about it in the near future.

The Scenario

The web site written was a discounting service oriented around cell phones. Users would send the site a message, and then receive a discount at local venues. They could go to the site on the intarwebs to see their total savings and learn about more venues.

The usage pattern was always:

User sends us a message.

We might send them a reply after processing it.

We might also periodically need to be able to send the user a message for other purporses, such as party invitations, etc (based on their preferences).

Downloading and Compiling

Kannel is trivially easy to download and compile. You visit the Kannel.org website and download the latest and greatest gateway-1.X.Y.tar.gz file.

From there:

# mkdir src
# cd src
# tar xfz ../downloads/gateway-1.4.1.tar.gz
# cd gateway-1.4.1
# ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/kannel

I chose to install to
/usr/local/kannel
just because I’m that kind of guy who likes to keep everything reasonably separated and organised. You’re free to put it anywhere.

Compile and install.

# make
# sudo make install
password: **************

Configuration Files

You can be forgiven for thinking Kannel is trivially easy thus far—it really is that easy to download, compile, and install. Unfortunately, here is where things get tricky.

You now need to set up a configuration file. This file has a zillion options to support all of the possible and powerful ways in which Kannel can be used. I will be showing strictly how I set it up for the GSM modem we had in the office (It’s a Siemens GSM modem connected to a serial port, and works quite well).

The basic smskannel.conf (in the
gw/
directory) has much of the information we want, but we’ll need to add a few things for our GSM modems and to interact with our web server correctly.

Configuration is divided into a few key groups, each representing the key parts of the kannel system, including the server that handles sending and receving the actual SMSes (bearerbox) and the system that handles the final dispatching to your scripts (smsbox).

The core Group

The first part of the file is the “core” group, and the default is pretty close to what we want:

group = core
admin-port = 13000
smsbox-port = 13001
admin-password = bar
#log-file = "/tmp/kannel.log"
#log-level = 0
box-deny-ip = "*.*.*.*"
box-allow-ip = "127.0.0.1"

You’ll want to change the password of course, but everything else is nearly standard. We are assuming that all communication to the kannel server will come from the same physical computer (127.0.0.1). You can set a log file if you are going to be running kannel as a service on your server, or you can just redirect stdout to some file.

Be aware that kannel has various log levels, ranging from 0, which displays information that is only of interest when you’re in the development and debugging phases, to 4, which only displays critical errors and problems. I tend to develop at level 0 and run live servers at level 1. Disk space is cheap.

The smsc Group

Kannel supports a pretty insane number of ways of sending and receiving SMSes, ranging from SMS services over HTTP, to a fake SMS centre for testing/development purposes, to GSM modems, which is what I have used and is the smsc module. These modems use
AT
-style modem commands and typically hook up over the serial port. To get this going, I set up the smsc group in the smskannel.conf file:

group = smsc
smsc = at
modemtype = auto
device=/dev/ttyS0
my-number = 123123123123
connect-allow-ip = 127.0.0.1
log-level = 0

The
my-number
field contains the number of your GSM modem’s SIM chip. Again, I only allow connections from my local server, and the Ubuntu Linux serial port is on
/dev/ttyS0
.

The smsbox Group

The
smsbox
group helps configure the part of the system that dispatches SMSes received by the core SMS or receives SMSes before they’re sent out. I honestly don’t fully understand what this group really does, but it’s necessary, and pretty trivial to set up.

group = smsbox
bearerbox-host = 127.0.0.1
sendsms-port = 13013
global-sender = 123123123123
log-level = 0

The
global-sender
field is the outgoing-number of your GSM modem, which for me is the same as the
my-number
field above.

The Sendsms Group

This group is what allows your web applications to send SMS messages using Kannel. They do this via simple HTTP requests, and configuration here basically requires a user name and password:

group = sendsms-user
username = kanneluser
password = df89asj89I23hvcxSDasdf3298jvkjc839
concatenation= true
max-messages = 10

Since the password is semi-plain and unprotected here, I tend to use one that is complicated and nearly impossible to remember, but quite different from any other passwords that I actualy use for login accounts and the like.

Getting the Messages to your application

The
sms-service
group configures how Kannel gets messages to your web application. You are allowed to specify a number of these groups, each of which can “catch” incoming messages based on various criteria. My application had all messages go to one processing script, so I just set up one group that caught all incoming messages.

group = sms-service
keyword =
keyword-regex = .*
catch-all = yes
max-messages = 0
get-url = "http://localhost/sms?phone=%p&text=%a"

This particular configuration has Kannel set up to use an HTTP
GET
request to send the message to my application. The param
phone
contains the phone number of the sender and the
text
parameter contains their entire  message.

NOTE: The
max-messages
value was particularly tricky and critical for me: When I first set up Kannel and tested sending messages, I would always get back
'<Empty  reply from service provider>'
.  Setting
max-messages
to
0
tells Kannel to never send a reply directly from the incoming message (you can, of course, initiate your own response later, of course).

Finally, Setting up the modems

Kannel and smsc tends to be pretty good at figuring out everything about your modem by yourself, but you can help them out by including modems.conf in your smskannel.conf file as I did:

include = "/usr/local/kannel/modems.conf"

Running the Server

The hard part is done; all we have to do now is copy over the config files and start the service up:

# cd /usr/local/kannel
# cp ~/src/gateway-1.4.1/smskannel.conf .
# cp ~/src/gateway-1.4.1/gw/modems.conf .
# sbin/bearerbox -v 0 smskannel.conf &
# sbin/smsbox -v 0 smskannel.conf &

I tend to run the last two commands in two separate shell windows when developing/debugging so that I can see the output from the two programs clearly and use the information to help me figure out what’s going on (level 0 really tells you a lot).

Receiving Messages

Kannel will simply call the URL you told it to in the
sms-service
group and you can process this with whatever HTTP server environment you want. We’re using LAMP right now, but, again, any will do. The incoming phone number and message are in
GET
parameters. You can, if you want, configure the
sms-service
to send them as POST messages as well.

Sending Messages through Kannel

The final part our puzzle is to send outgoing SMS messages through Kannel, and has only one little twist. It is also done via an HTTP interface. It requires you to be a little careful about the character set you use. I found I had the most success by using the UCS-2 character set. In PHP5, you can easily use the
iconv
function to do this for you.

Since I send both English and Chinese messages, my PHP scripts and langugage string files are all UTF-8. Here is the code I use to send messages:

function sendSmsMessage($in_phoneNumber, $in_msg)
{
   $url = '/cgi-bin/sendsms?username=' . CONFIG_KANNEL_USER_NAME
          . '&password=' . CONFIG_KANNEL_PASSWORD
          . '&charset=UCS-2&coding=2'
          . "&to={$in_phoneNumber}"
          . '&text=' . urlencode(iconv('utf-8', 'ucs-2', $in_msg));

   $results = file('http://'
                   . CONFIG_KANNEL_HOST . ':'
                   . CONFIG_KANNEL_PORT . $url);
}

To make this work, of course, you need to have
allow_url_fopen
set to
On
.

That’s It

That’s pretty much it. This has been a pretty dry article, but it does contain everything you need to get Kannel up and running and operational. The manual actually does contain everything you could possibly want to know, so keep digging in there if you’re stuck. Finally, there are mailing lists at kannel.org which tend to be quite helpful as well.

Good luck!

Now the talking heads on cable news will have something else to complain about. ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, has given initial approval for a .xxx top-level domain. Should the initial approval become final approval, you’ll be able to register URLs like nakedchicksdoingstuff.xxx.

It’s a pretty big deal for a few reasons. For one it’s makes filtering out unwanted content approximately 80 billion times easier—just block access to all .xxx domains and call it a day. You’d think that would have made to creation of the TLD popular with the anti-porn brigade, but it didn’t. Nope, their arguments went something along the lines of, “The creation of a .xxx TLD will encourage the proliferation of Internet pornography. Or, similarly, that it will create a sort of red light district online.

Needless to say, porn has done a pretty amazing job of spreading across the Internet even without a dedicated TLD. Remember: fully one-third of all Internet downloads are for pornography.

ICANN, for its part, wasn’t sure it wanted to create a .xxx TLD for fear that it would be forced into a sort of Internet policing role. That’s not ICANN’s job, and it couldn’t be an “Internet cop” even if it wanted to.

All of this started way back in 2005 when the first proposals were being put forth to create the TLD. Complaints and ICANN’s own fear (see above) delayed the proceedings.

I have so many URLs that I’d love to buy then turn around and sell to, I don’t know, Larry Flint or whatever.

How much is nudegirlsplayingnintendowii.xxx worth?

According to a fascinating interview with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg this week on Inside Facebook (Discussing the Future of Facebook and the Facebook Ecosystem with CEO Mark Zuckerberg), Facebook admits that they may have focused too much on trying to emulate Twitter, the fast-growing microblogging platform, when formulating their strategies and plans for the future.

In the interview, which touched on numerous topics including the future of social gaming on Facebook, Zuckerberg’s plans for the Facebook Credits payment system, and Facebook’s current financials, Zuckerberg admitted that he personally had “paid too much attention” to Twitter over the course of the past few years. According to Zuckerberg:

“At first I think we learned that they do a lot of things really well. It’s a very nice, simple service. They do one thing really well – that’s powerful.

“I think the main thing was we looked at their growth rate and – well, we saw our exponential growth rate continue for a very long period of time, and it still does at a super-linear rate, though not quite 3% a week any more. I looked at their rate and thought if this continues for 12 months or 18 months, then in a year they’re going to be bigger than us. I guess I extrapolated too much from our own experience of what was possible, but it just turned out that that their growth rate was kind of unnatural.”

Zuckerberg is certainly correct when he says that Twitter’s growth rate wasn’t sustainable – and he isn’t even mentioning the fact that a significant portion of Twitter’s massive growth rate came either from spammers who create hundreds of accounts at a time, or from people who try the service, use it for a few days, and then quit. The latter group accounts for a significant proportion of new Twitter accounts.

To say that Zuckerberg “paid too much attention” to Twitter is a bit of an understatement. Over the last two years, Facebook has taken significant steps toward emulating Twitter’s functionality, most notably pushing their once-private social network towards a more public system, notably “recommending” to users during privacy overhauls that they expose much of the private information that they had previously held back.

From the tone of Zuckerberg’s comments, and considering the new direction that Facebook appears to be taking (namely paying too much attention to Foursquare and other locational “check in” services), it seems that the Facebook founder’s obsession with microblogging is waning. What that bodes for the future of the world’s largest social network is unclear, but one thing you can count on is that although Zuckerberg might not be focusing too closely on Twitter, he’s definitely still got his eyes on it.

Attention!! all Worldlink users and all other People who are willing to subscribe wlink internet connection in nepal.

I have been using Wlink since last few months , with really a Worst Support and Worst Service. I am really tired of asking Support from their customer care(support) I was Searching About Wlink today in “Facebook” i found that their Customer support officer is not really Into giving Full Support to customers.Yes, WorldCup is running, eveyone wants to see worldcup these days.

Everyday i make them a call and ask for support, Some of theme are really so rude. They just hang up the Call sometime. Supervisor named “ru****” told me that he will make a call after problem gets solved, its been more than 2 weeks, Still there is no solution

Before we get into this… these instructions look a lot worse than what they are– I tried to be very

thorough. As of 2 hours ago, I’m currently running WAMP 1.6.4 + RoR on Windows XP Pro (SP2).

Things  you will need:

1. Wampserver (Prepackaged Apache 2, PHP, phpMyAdmin, MySQL) -

http://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php

2. Ruby “One-Click” Installer for Windows – http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=167

3. Ruby Gems for Windows (Similar to PEAR) - http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=126

4. Ruby For  Apache - http://rubyforge.org/projects/rubyforapache/

Step  By Step Process:

First and foremost, I have used many servers for my development environment, but none have

compared to WAMP. It allows you to easily flip Apache modules / PHP extensions on and off, not to

mention switch between PHP 4 and PHP 5, all with an unintrusive GUI. There are quite a few plug-ins

such as Zend Optimizer, Webalizer, Perl, etc. The best part is that WAMP is FREE. (although

donations are welcome, which I myself have been rallying my organization to contribute to the

project).

Keep in mind that for my entire example, wamp is setup on my D:\wamp drive / path. As you are

following these instructions, substitute your drive / path. I will remind you periodically to substitute

your drive / path. It is imparitive you pay attention, and follow these instructions verbatim. Do not

skip ahead! (unless told to do so)

Step 1 – Install Wampserver (#1 of “Things you will need”)

- If you already have WAMP installed, continue to Step 2

Step 2 – Install Ruby (#2 of “Things you will need”)

- When the application starts, it will ask you if you want to install SciTE and FreeRIDE; These are not

required

- I installed ruby alongside my php directories under D:\wamp, so the end path will be D:\wamp\ruby

- Click  “Install“

Step 3 – Install Ruby Gems (#3 of “Things you will need”)

- Extract the contents of your Ruby Gems to D:\wamp\ruby\rubygems

- Open a DOS prompt window, and enter the following commands

> D:

> cd  D:\wamp\ruby\rubygems

>  setup

- Note: keep in mind your wamp drive / path

- If all went well, you should see the following (or similar):

Successfully  built RubyGem

Name:  sources

Version:  0.0.1

File:  sources-0.0.1.gem

Step  4 – Install Rails

- Open a DOS prompt window, and enter the following commands:

> D:

> cd  D:\wamp\ruby\rubygems

>  gem install rails –include-dependencies

- Be patient… gems is downloading rails from rubyforge.org

- Again, if all went well, you should have seen commands executing, with a final note indicating

Installing  RDoc documentation for activerecord-1.14.4…

Installing  RDoc documentation for actionpack-1.12.5…

Installing  RDoc documentation for actionmailer-1.2.5…

Installing  RDoc documentation for actionwebservice-1.1.6…

- Keep in mind that there will be more statements than what I included above.

Step 5 – Install Ruby For Apache (#4 of “Things you will need”)

- I installed Ruby for Apache in my D:\wamp\ruby\RubyForApache subdirectory

- Locate your Apache server directory, in my case, its D:\wamp\Apache2 (keep in mind that the

application for whatever reason tries to append “RubyForApache” to the path. Simply make the path

“D:\wamp\Apache2″ (or where your root Apache directory is located))

- Next, locate your root ruby directory, which is D:\wamp\ruby for me. Again, remove the

“RubyForApache” from the “D:wamp\ruby” path (see above).

- Finally, for the Installation Options, uncheck all options but “mod_fastcgi”

- Note: The application may alert you that it cannot open c:\xppro\system32\msvcp71.dll. Just

rename it and retry. As I’m writing this documentation, I didn’t have an issue, but had noticed it on a

previous  install.

Step  6 – Setup Apache

- After the Ruby For Apache is installed, you will notice ‘mod_fastcgi.so’ in your

D:\wamp\Apache2\modules  folder

- Next, move to D:\wamp\Apache2\config directory and open ‘httpd.conf’

- After the LoadModules section, append the following code:

LoadModule  fastcgi_module modules/mod_fastcgi.so

<IfModule>

FastCgiConfig  -maxClassProcesses 10 -maxProcesses 10 -

minProcesses  1 -processSlack 1 \

-initial-env

PATH=”d:/wamp/ruby/bin;c:/windows/system32;c:/windows;d:/wamp/mysql/bin/”

\

-initial-env  RUBYOPT=rubygems

AddHandler  fastcgi-script .fcgi .fpl

</IfModule>

- UPDATE: phpBB is parsing the above code incorrectly. The opening “IfModule” tag above needs

to be changed to: “IfModule mod_fastcgi.c”

- Note: Substitute your wamp drive / path!

- Also, make for certain the following is uncommented:

LoadModule  rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so

- Restart Apache via the Wampserver system tray GUI

Step 7 – Install your first Rails App

- If you have a “work” directory for Ruby projects, change to that directory. Open a DOS prompt

window, and enter the following commands:

> D:

> cd  D:\wamp\www\projects\RUBY

>  rails test

- This creates your first rails application in D:/wamp/www/projects/RUBY/test

- Note: your “projects\RUBY\” directory may differ. Simply substitute your path as needed.

Step  8 – Modify your “test” install’s “public/.htaccess” file

- Navigate to your D:\wamp\www\projects\test\public\ folder and open the .htaccess file

- Look  for:

#  General Apache options

AddHandler  fastcgi-script .fcgi

AddHandler  cgi-script .cgi

Options  +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI

- And  change to:

#  General Apache options

#  AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi

#  AddHandler cgi-script .cgi

Options  +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI

- We do this because we’ve already defined the handlers in step 6.

- Next,  look for:

RewriteRule  ^(.*)$ dispatch.cgi [QSA,L]

- And change to (change .cgi extension to .fcgi):

RewriteRule  ^(.*)$ dispatch.fcgi [QSA,L]

- Save and close the file

Step 9 – You are almost done. One last change to the “public/dispatch.fcgi” file

- Navigate to your D:\wamp\www\projects\test\public\ folder and open the dispatch.fcgi file

- Change the #! (shebang – line #1) at the top of the file to reflect the path to the Ruby interpreter

(where its located on your system). I had to change mine to:

#!D:/wamp/ruby/bin/ruby

- Note: Your path may differ. If you don’t remember the ruby intepreter’s path, refer to Step 2.

- Save and close the file

In  Conclusion

Finally, you should be ready to see some action. Make for certain that you restart your wampserver.

If not all of the services fire up (mainly Apache), you might have skipped a step, or “fat-fingered”

something. Go back now and check your work.

If the servers did start fine, open a browser (preferably something that is not IE ), and point it to

http://127.0.0.1/projects/RUBY/test/public/ Again, change “projects/RUBY/” to the appropriate

path, but DONT REMOVE “public” from the URL! The directory “public/” is where rails is initialized.

Depending on server configuration (production/live), this is usually done with .htaccess files,

http.conf virtual hosts, etc. Don’t worry about this so much.

Once you direct your browser to the aforementioned URL, you should see the “Welcome Aboard”

index page– don’t celebrate yet. Directly beneath the header, there is a link that says “About your

application’s environment,” click it. If you see a yellow box animate open, you are good to go. If you

Why compare these two?

CakePHP and CodeIgniter are quite similar in their approach on a number of things, including their support for PHP4. Any mention of one inevitably leads to someone mentioning the other.

They both attempt to create an MVC architecture which simply means they separate the (data) Model from the Controller (which pulls data from the model to give to the view) from the View (what the user sees).

They both use Routing which takes a URL and maps it to a particular function within a controller (CakePHP calls these actions). CodeIgniter supports regular expressions for routing, whereas you’ll have to wait until CakePHP 1.2 for that feature. Correction: CakePHP 1.1 supports regular expression for routing but it’s not detailed in the manual and is getting updated in 1.2.

They both support Scaffolding which is an automated way of generating a view based on the model. Scaffolding is meant for simple prototyping and CodeIgniter takes it a step further by requiring a keyword in the URL to even access the scaffolding. I’m guessing one could omit the keyword, leaving this feature essentially optional. I prefer not to have to use the keyword as I sometimes build personal projects not intended for public eyes and using a keyword would be a nuisance.

And the list goes on…

Approach to Simplicity

I believe much of CodeIgniter’s appeal is its simplicity in its approach. Most of the work is done in the controller, loading in libraries, getting data from the model, and pulling in the view. Everything is in plain sight and you can really see how things work.

CakePHP’s simplicity comes via automation (euphemistically referred to as “automagic”). It makes the coding process quicker but harder to figure out “what is going on” without popping your head into the core. For me, I like to understand how everything works and I’ve had to poke around under the hood more than once. For people just getting started, things probably look a little daunting.

Working with Models

CodeIgniter’s model handling is fairly straightfoward and basically allows you to mimic a standard SQL query with a few straightforward commands like these examples:

$query = $this->db->getwhere('mytable', array(id => $id), $limit, $offset);

$this->db->select('title')->from('mytable')->where('id', $id)->limit(10, 20);
$query = $this->db->get();

Note: the method chaining in the second part of this example is only available in PHP5.

You can also create a model object, load it in and build custom methods to handle a custom task. You’d want to do this in the model and not the controller to help isolate code into the MVC silos.

CakePHP takes a slightly different route by automatically loading in the model that matches the current controller (controllers tend to be named similarly to the models they are associated with). You can turn off this automated loading and even assign different models that should be loaded by the controller instead.

CakePHP also takes things further by establishing all the model associations for you, allowing for some really easy querying. For example, assuming I’m in a controller named
post_controller
, I could do the following:

$this->Post->Comment->findAllByPostId($id)

I chose this particular query because it shows two different concepts. The first is the fact that I can access the Comment model via the Post model (assuming I’ve defined that association in the Post model). The second is the fact that I have a method called
findAllByPostId
. CakePHP allows records to be grabbed via findByX and findAllByX queries where X is equal to the field name you’re trying to find.

Where I think Cake shines is in its ability to pull in all associated data automatically. Take the following query as an example:

$this->Post->findById($id)

This query would automatically pull in all the comments associated with this Post. Really handy stuff.

Validation

When working with models, you’ll inevitably have to handle data validation. Data validation in CodeIgniter is handled via a validation class. A set of rules get defined and assigned to the validation object. The validation object automatically (I assume) validates the data passed via the URL or form. From there, you can decide how that gets handled. The validation class can also help automate some of the process of setting error messages for specific fields.

CakePHP handles its validation through the model itself in one of two ways. The first uses a single test against each field defined in a validate variable declared in the model. This works okay for simple stuff but it quickly becomes a cumbrance. Beyond simple validation, I take advantage of the
beforeSave
callback to perform any custom validation, invalidating any fields that fail.

It’s a toss up for me as to which one “wins”. CakePHP 1.2 will have its validation system reworked a bit to allow for more flexibility.

Views

CakePHP handles this fairly well by using a default layout (which you can easily switch at runtime). The layout has two variables be default:
title_for_layout
and
content_for_layout
. Each action automatically links to a particular view which gets spat into place. Again, it’s the “automagic” approach. As long as you name your files a specific way, controllers automatically get linked to models and views. It’s easy enough to override all of this, too, and define your own layouts or view files. There’s no convenient way to get the generated view data, however, making custom built caching mechanisms difficult to implement.

CodeIgniter takes a very straightforward approach: like include files, almost. Each file gets loaded in and processed. There’s a templating class but it doesn’t simplify things much beyond the built-in view handling. You can mimic the CakePHP approach by always including the header and footer calls but it’s not as seamless. CodeIgniter offers hooks allowing view and caching mechanisms to be overridden and replaced with a custom system.

Out of the Box Features

CodeIgniter in my mind wins this hands down with classes for FTP, Email, File Uploading, XMLRPC, Zip encoding and more.

CakePHP on the flip side comes pretty light but tries to make up for it using the Bakery. You can, like CodeIgniter, easily drop in 3rd party classes for any features you might need. Interestingly, although I haven’t tried it, you could probably drop in many of the CI classes into CakePHP without issue.

Auto-loading

CakePHP allows for application-wide changes to be done via the base application controller that all other controllers inherit from. Likewise, you can create global model methods using the application model file. However, you can fine tune things at the controller level using any of the controller-level callbacks (
beforeFilter
,
afterFilter
and
beforeRender
). Things like auto-loading helpers and components can also be specified easily at the individual controller level.

CodeIgniter allows for the auto-loading of helpers, libraries and plugins but does this application-wide.

Documentation

Documentation is key to understanding any framework well enough to develop within it.

CodeIgniter has a complete list of all components with each method and property documented within. CI also has forums and a wiki which feature a lot of user-submitted code.

CakePHP, on the other hand, isn’t as well organized. The manual is starting to show its age with some sections not really going much beyond what the API offers. Because of the format of the original documentation, you can also get it in other formats such as CHM and PDF. CakePHP has the Bakery which contains user-submitted articles, components, etc. The dev team also hangs out heavily on the IRC channel (#cakephp at irc.freenode.net). Finally, there’s the CakePHP Google Group which is pretty active.

Final Verdict

I’m a pretty pragmatic individual and I honestly feel that these two frameworks have a lot going for them. They take a much simpler approach to application development than the complexity that is something like Symfony.

I’m still personally a fan of CakePHP over CodeIgniter for much of the “automagic” that I mentioned. And it’s shortcomings have been getting addressed with each new iteration (1.2 will be a considerable leap over 1.1 but it will still be awhile before it’s released).

Notes

This comparison was based on the documentation for CodeIgniter 1.5.2 and having used CakePHP 1.1. I have specifically avoided the subject of performance due to the amount of time required to design, develop and test such a thing.

There’s a small feature on the way that’s about to make another big change to the way people use Facebook: the ability to “Like” comments.

Much like you can currently “Like” status updates, wall posts and other items in the News Feed, Facebook has started rolling out a “Like” button for comments. The feature is not yet live for everyone.

The functionality is much the same as traditional “Likes.” In a blog post, Facebook writes that, “when you click ‘Like’ on a comment the commenter will receive a notification. Other people who can see the comment based on its privacy setting also will be able to see who has liked the comment.”

Bidmandu offers bargain auctions of brand new products. Save up to 90% for every Brand new products. Bid and Win high quality products with maximum discount. Start bidding and winning now! Bidmandu is One an only Penny Auction In Nepal.

1) Take enforced, regular and prolonged breaks between cycles of bidding. Set an alarm clock if necessary, and force yourself to physically walk away from the computer, or close your access to the penny auction website. Do not take the attitude that you’ll stop when you’ve just seen this one item through to the end – make yourself regularly stop bidding, stop following an auction and walk away and do something else altogether.

2) Set yourself a very strict budget and never extend it. Whether yours is a daily, weekly or monthly budget, once you have reached its limit discontinue bidding. No arguments.

3) Think about an item carefully before you begin bidding on it. Do you really want or need the item in question, if so, how much are you prepared to spend on it. Factor in not only each penny bid you’re willing to make, but the cost of making each bid. Work out how much you are willing to spend on a given item and stick to your limits. If the item for sale goes over your allotted budget, walk away.

4) Only enter an auction when you are sober and awake, in a clear and positive frame of mind. In other words, if anything is clouding your judgement – from stress at home or work to alcohol or medication – do not enter the penny auction.

5) Concentrate carefully on what you are doing and where your bids are taking you. Some sites allow you to set up an automatic bidding filter so that you can carry on bidding for something even when you’re not concentrating on the auction. Such filters are dangerous and you must always ensure you are in control of your bidding.
