Late last year, we published a list of the top 10 IPO candidates of 2010. Leading that list was Facebook, which has grown to 400 million users and is finally starting to turn on the revenue pumps as it works toward its inevitable IPO. But this evening, the Wall Street Journal published an article penned by Jessica Vascellaro that may dash the hopes of anyone who thinks that will happen in the immediate future. The lengthy piece, which is well worth reading in its entirety, touches on quite a few issues related to Facebook’s history and its future, and largely revolves around CEO Mark Zuckerberg — who doesn’t sound all that keen to take his company public.

While the article covers a lot of familiar territory about Facebook’s past, there’s plenty of new information too. Of note, the article says that Facebook executives have “discussed how revenues for 2010 could hit between $1.2 to $2 billion” — figures that exceed even the $1.1 billion InsideFacebook’s Eric Eldon reported yesterday (clearly, the number is looking big). The article also asserts that Facebook is working on a tool for sharing your physical location with Facebook (something that we’ve been hearing about for quite a while, and that I believe will be key in the future).

With regard to Facebook’s IPO, the article discusses Zuckerberg’s penchant for “delayed gratification”, which he says he has a special capacity for. And because Zuckerberg still maintains firm control over the company, and when it will IPO, delayed gratification seems to be the law of the land.

There are also a handful of interesting anecdotes about Zuckerberg. According to the article, a Facebook engineer once wrote an internal memo called “Working With Zuck”, in which he warned other employees not to hope for much in the way of back-patting from their CEO, explaining they should not “expect acknowledgment for your role in moving the discussion forward; getting the product right should be its own reward.”

In November 2009, both the beta of Microsoft Office 2010 as well as the Outlook Social Connector was announced. The Outlook Social Connector brings together communications history, contact information, and professional and social networking information into the Outlook experience.

We are continuing to deliver on that vision today with two new announcements. First, we’re proud to announce the public beta of LinkedIn for Outlook, which will enable our millions of Office 2010 Beta users to connect the OSC to a public network for the first time. Second, we’re excited to announce partnerships with Facebook — the most popular social Web site in the world, and MySpace — a leading social platform connecting people through expression, content, and culture.

LinkedIn for Outlook brings together the most popular professional network with the world’s leading professional Inbox. Here are some of the things you can do today by downloading the beta:

Connect to your LinkedIn account to view your colleagues’ status updates and photos next to an e-mail message they sent you.

Your colleagues’ latest contact information from LinkedIn automatically updates his or her Outlook contact. Whenever someone changes a phone number, e-mail address, or other contact details, it’s automatically updated in Outlook — you are always up to date.

Synchronize your mobile phone with Outlook to stay up-to-date — you don’t have to worry about keeping track of new phone numbers and contact info — contacts’ information from the Web is synchronized to your mobile phone.

Grow your professional network directly from within your Inbox — add colleagues with one click.

We are proud to continue partnering with LinkedIn and we want to congratulate them on a job well done. With this beta, our customers are able to stay connected to their network without leaving the Outlook Inbox.

Our vision for Outlook (and the OSC) is to provide a communications hub that is vital to both professional and personal communications; by integrating with both Facebook and MySpace, Outlook 2010 enables you to connect not only to co-workers and colleagues, but with all of your friends and family within your Outlook Inbox.

Facebook for Outlook

You can view friends’ activities, photos, and status updates within Outlook — as well as grow your network by adding friends from the same view. Both Facebook for Outlook and MySpace for Outlook will be available later this year as our official release of Office 2010 approaches.

Finally, its important to mention that with multiple professional and social networks available for the Outlook Social Connector, the design of the OSC is such that your privacy and permissions settings on each of the networks you use are represented and respected within this experience. For example, if your profile photo and job title are publicly listed on a given network, then OSC users will see your photo and job title when receiving an e-mail from you (if they use that same network). Similarly, if you choose to restrict profile access on a given network, the OSC will respect that privacy. The goal of the OSC is not to create another social network or set of privacy settings for you to manage, but rather to bring the networks you already value and use to the Outlook experience.

To recap, here is what you can do today to get started with the Outlook Social Connector.

Download the Office 2010 Beta at www.Office.com/beta

Download the latest beta version of the Outlook Social Connector from the Microsoft Download Center.

Get the LinkedIn download for the Outlook Social Connector at www.LinkedIn.com/outlook.

Keep watching the Outlook team blog for availability of the Facebook and MySpace download for the Outlook Social Connector at http://blogs.msdn.com/outlook/.

Note To use LinkedIn for Outlook requires the latest version of the Outlook Social Connector, which supports the 32-bit English version of the official Microsoft Office 2010 Beta. The beta of the Outlook Social Connector is provided as-is, is subject to change without notice, and does not include formal product support from Microsoft.

Google recently released Buzz, the company’s foray into the social networking world of microblogging. The service competes with other social sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Upon release, Buzz has been getting some criticism over its default privacy settings.

Google launched Buzz last Tuesday to the public after its announcement. The new service piggybacks off Gmail automatically so users do not have to update their email account. According to USA Today, Buzz has been receiving harsh criticism over its default privacy settings as it taps into your Gmail contacts list.

This integration was done for the most part under the radar causing many to raise concerns over the way it was implemented. Buzz leeches off your contacts list by auto-following those who you may email frequently with. This is similar to Twitter where users can follow someone.

The controversy is around the “auto-follow” feature that automatically links those who you email frequently with in your Gmail account to Buzz. When posting something onto Buzz everyone can see who is following you. Basically this allows strangers to see who you email with frequently.

The problem is that most people don’t want the world to know who they email frequently with. Google attempted to rectify the problem by revising the privacy settings so that users have to jump through a few more hoops before being able to post. Some critics have even asked Google to completely disable the “auto-follow” feature from their Gmail accounts as they feel it violates their email privacy.

Buzz is definitely a brilliant idea as it seamlessly provides a new service without having the users sign up for something new. This pretty much tackles the main entry barrier for most users. However, Google will need to be extra careful since the way Buzz is implemented into Gmail could potentially be a nightmare when dealing with hackers and spammers.

Simply connect your Facebook account with the instant messaging client of your choice and start chatting. You will not need to stay logged in to Facebook.com to continue to access your Facebook friends.

To go offline, you can either close your instant messaging client or click “go offline” in your Facebook Chat options. As always, your conversations will remain completely private and only between you and your Facebook friends

To make Facebook Chat available everywhere, we are using the technology Jabber (XMPP), an open messaging protocol supported by most instant messaging software, including iChat, Pidgin, Adium, Miranda and more.

Google is expected to plunge into the world of Facebook and Twitter, using its popular Gmail service to allow users to post status updates and items.

The search-engine giant, which recently tweaked its search function to allow easier access to social media results, has planned an event for Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET at its California headquarters.

That comes a day after the Wall Street Journal quoted “people familiar with the matter” saying the feature would allow Facebook-style status updates, as well as pinging when users post something to affiliated sites like YouTube or Picasa.

If it appears as described, it would be a sort of anti-Twitter, making a user’s updates private by default, as opposed to open, as they are on the micro-blogging site.

The hands-down leader in the search engine world, Google has been branching out on projects that include its Nexus One smartphone — the company’s first foray into hardware marketing.

Late last month,Google announced that people could tweak their accounts to make results related to friends, co-workers and other members of their social networks appear above all other results.

The Social Search feature was introduced to a limited number of Google users last year and was made available to everyone in beta status on January 28.

The change came with a hint of more things to come.

“This is just a first step in our ongoing effort to ensure that Google Web search is always as social as the Web itself,” the company said in an instructional video posted to its official blog.

Twitter is far more valuable than just a social network for a web site owner. Its a tremendous traffic generator! I’m sure we have all heard of or used Free For All (FFA) pages to try and generate traffic to websites quickly… but all we got for our trouble was a email box full of junk mail…. right? Come on admit it and we got zero to very little traffic gains for our trouble.

Well Twitter being a social network is also a Social FFA page that REALLY WORKS! And no junk mail to deal with either! Just set you up a free account at http://twitter.com and start posting short topics of interest on your web sites and opportunities, topic of interest on anything basicly and people will follow you. The more that follow you the more people will see your topics… its viral and its targeted! Soon you will be able to drive targeted traffic to practically any site you want to just by posting a topic. After spending one heck of alot of money for products, services and advertising that did not work, its refreshing to find one service thats free and does work better than most you pay for.

In my opinion if you own a web site or promote affiliate programs then you should consider twitter as a advertising medium for your business http://twitter.com

Facebook Music may not exist, but you may have it installed anyway. Right now if you log into the site and go to Facebook’s “Edit Applications” screen, you’ll probably encounter a new application at the top of the list: Music. And it’s pretty clear that this isn’t just some third party app; the application links to Facebook.com/music, which is the same format used by other official Facebook applications, including photos (Facebook.com/photos) and events (Facebook.com/events). But the application doesn’t work at all — clicking it just brings you to your Facebook News Feed.

We reached out to Facebook about the mysterious application. They’ve directed us to a Facebook Music Player app that appears on some Facebook Pages, and say that there may be a bug that’s showing some Pages apps on the editapps.php page (they’re looking into the issue). That may well be the case, but the Pages music player application has a different Application ID than this new one does — it doesn’t look like they’re the same thing. Still, Facebook’s spokesperson was pretty clear that there was no new Facebook Music app, stating, “We have no plans to launch a music service on Facebook.”

Facebook long considered launching a free music service, and previously engaged in talks with multiple different streaming services to power the site. Obviously those didn’t pan out, and in light of Facebook’s promotion of third party apps and pages, they may have decided to ditch the idea entirely.

TweetRl is a site that has the objective of letting anybody monetize his own links by having them placed both on Twitter and StumbleUpon. That is, those who do use the site will have their own links relocated to these two social services.

Submitting content to the site is not that different from submitting anything to a site like Digg, only that in this case you log in using your Twitter credentials. You also have to give a title to your story, and add some details to place it all into context. A category must likewise be chosen from the several on offer, and these mirror the structure of social sharing sites quite closely.

Upon complying with that, your story will be posted to Twitter and submitted to your own StumbleUpon page at the very same time. It will also make it to the TweetRl homepage if it becomes popular enough. Best of all, every story that you relocate like this will carry your own Google Ads, so that you will drive traffic to your site and make an income at the same time.

iPhone and now iPad Developers now have a more detailed way to see how app approvals are progressing. Apple added a clock a few weeks ago that displayed the percentage of apps approved within the last 14 days.

Now there is a new clock that shows the percentage of new apps approved within the last seven days as well as the percentage of apps updated approved within the last 7 days. Right now the percentages are locked in at 99% for updates and 98% for new apps.

This shows that Apple is striving to improve the developer experience after some bad press received from the review process.

Joe Zeff, the former presentation editor of New York Times and graphics director of Time, is suggesting publishers bundle magazine and newspaper subscriptions, with a free Apple iPad.

Imagine it: Get all of Condé Nast and every New York newspaper in your pocket for five years. For the low, low price of $10,000, we’ll also throw in a free Apple iPad!

He explains on the Joe Zeff Design blog:

Love it or hate it, the iPad remains the publishing industry’s best chance at resurrection, but only if enough consumers buy in. The price tag is the biggest obstacle — $499 for an iPlane Jane model or $629 plus monthly service for 3G-powered Pad. But what if the publishing industry helped to defray that cost, bundling an iPad with a multi-year subscription to hundreds of newspapers and magazines? It’s a short-term investment that could pay off handsomely, and one of many options that should be considered in order to lure a new generation of readers to a new world of possibilities.

As Zeff notes, this is actually an old-school model.

Maybe it’s time for Sports Illustrated to bring back the sneaker phone. That’s what it took in 1991 to get people to subscribe to SI, and it might be what’s needed to sell a tablet version of the magazine two decades later.

Watch the original SI commercial for the sneaker phone.

The war against IE6 continues. Effective March 1, 2010, Google will begin phasing out support for Internet Explorer 6 in Google Docs and Google Sites.

Google has just announced the news that it’s joining the long list of companies that will no longer support IE6. Once Google begins phasing out support for the archaic browser, Google Docs and Google Sites will be the first to go, but we should expect most Google products to become much less functional in IE6 in 2010.

Google writes:

“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites. As a result you may find that from March 1 key functionality within these products — as well as new Docs and Sites features — won’t work properly in older browsers.”

For a more in-depth look at why IE6 is a problematic browser, take a look at this post and then read up on a few more key reasons — think security and the fact that various governments are anti-IE .

Microsoft’s brass is always looking for the next billion dollar business and has stuck a toe into everything from healthcare to energy monitoring. But as the company’s second quarter earnings for fiscal 2010, which Microsoft released on January 28, show, Windows is still the big wheel that keeps on turning in Redmond.

Consumer sales of Windows 7 buoyed Microsoft to report record earnings, even after deferrals were figured in. Microsoft reported net income of $6.66 billion, or 74 cents a share, on revenue of $19.02 billion, which included $1.71 billion in Windows 7 deferred revenue for the quarter.

As part of that announcement, Microsoft reported that it has sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses to date. The combined Windows and the Windows Live division had operating income of $5.39 billion on revenue of $6.9 billion, compared to the year-ago quarter’s operating income of $2.71 billion on revenue of $4.06 billion.

Business sales of Windows 7 — unsurprisingly, given typical enterprise sales, testing and deployment cycles — have yet to kick in for Windows 7. That isn’t because business users are waiting for Windows 7 Service Pack (SP) 1, which is widely expected to ship some time this calendar year, Microsoft officials said. In fact, Microsoft is seeing more business activity around upgrades to the latest version of Windows than it has with previous launches, according to Microsoft’s new Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein.

“People want Windows 7 on all devices on all form factors,” said Klein during today’s call with Wall Street analysts. (In case you were wondering, that question wasn’t prompted by a question about the Apple iPad. Nobody asked about it during the Q&A session.)

Klein noted that netbooks currently comprise about 11 percent of the PC market and Windows is currently on 90 percent of these machines. Windows 7 is more than half of that base (XP, and to a much lesser extent, Vista) are on the rest of the Windows netbooks.

Yes, Office is still the other big Microsoft cash cow (with revenues of $4.74 billion for the Business DIvision this quarter), and that unit ended up really kicking in for Microsoft when the economy and Vista sales were down. But in Q2, But Business Division revenues and operating income were both down, compared to the year-ago quarter. Microsoft officials attributed the decline, in part, to the imminent arrival of Office 2010. (Office sales comprise more than 90 percent of the Business Division’s revenues; Dynamics products are the other 10 percent.)

(Detailed breakdowns for each division can be found in Microsoft’s latest 10-Q, filed on January 28.)

Server and Tools held its own (revenues up two percent, primarily because of Enterprise Client Access License (CAL) suites, System Center and SQL Server). But services/consulting revenues were down two percent, or $32 million. The Online Services Division (the search/advertising unit) is still in the red. Online access (dial-up) continues to plummet, and online advertising was off. In Entertainment and Devices, gaming console and game sales were down, but Xbox Live revenues were up.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown by division of revenue and operating income (click on the image below to enlarge).

Microsoft cut 800 jobs in the second quarter of FY 2010 and spent $59 million in severance payments. No analyst on today’s call asked whether there would be more layoffs planned for this year. The Softies did say they planned to continue to keep a tight rein on costs. While the Windows division spent more than usual on sales/marketing because of Windows 7 launch-related activities and ads, other divisions cut back on not just headcount, but also sales and marketing, as well as research and development expenses.

First a disclaimer: Apple’s new iPad didn’t meet expectations, either mine, or the folks who I’ve been talking with on Twitter.

If my friends who work with or for Apple and in the press hadn’t built it up as mind blowing it wouldn’t have been disappointing, but this was a case where expectations got too big and what showed up didn’t meet them. Come on, no radically new way to interact? No Flash? No full OS? No Camera? No Verizon?

I was expecting a 10.0 and an 8.7 showed up.

But if you compare it to what I would have given Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer at CES (I would have scored that a 4.9, mostly because they showed clips of a really cool new Halo coming later this year) then it blows away the competition (which I expected when I wrote about Steve Ballmer’s Tablet bumbles last night).
.

Watch Financial Times’ first hands on video and you get a sense of why it is so much better than Microsoft’s tablets, though. Apple delivered a consistent and deep touch experience.

But, now, where does today’s announcements leave Google and Microsoft?

I had Google’s Don Dodge (developer advocate) over to watch the Apple announcements today, and I saw several places where Apple was trying to limit Google’s ability to grow. Maps, calendar, Keynote (presentation software) and email on the iPad are all very pretty (we’ll see how good they are when we actually are able to use a device for more than 10 minutes) and compete very effectively against Google’s current offerings.

And against Microsoft I now see that Apple has just eviscerated Microsoft’s mobile strategy with a family of products that will be hard for Microsoft to compete against. But the damage to Microsoft goes further. I see Apple now going after the Xbox and putting a wall around Microsoft’s home entertainment dreams so it won’t be able to grow much further.

Many peoples are using iPhones to play games and watch videos more and more and the iPad will continue that trend. It’s clear to me, though, that Xbox has largely tapped out the home console market and will see slowing growth over next year or two and I know Microsoft has built a team around Zune to go after mobile entertainment (IE, a portable Xbox).

If Microsoft doesn’t get that shipped soon Apple will use the iPad to shore up its leverage with developers like Tapulous, who are building games for iPhone, and will ensure a whole range of games will only show up on Apple’s mobile devices and not on anything Microsoft will do. Microsoft must be very concerned by that.

Back to Google. I think the Chrome OS will prove very interesting as Google comes back against Apple with a device that costs less (Chrome OS is cheaper on hardware than Apple’s OS is, and also is cheaper in licensing fees, so I expect to see Chrome OS-based devices for around $200, instead of the $500 that Apple’s iPad starts at.

That’s where I expect to see major clashes over the next year as Google and Apple try to lock up movie, books, magazines, newspapers, and other media to make their systems better than the others. My predictions of how Google will respond? Look at Chrome OS and watch for new devices that compete with Apple head on. Look at Google Voice to be built onto. Look for Google Maps to even further extend their lead in the industry. Look for Google to come out with a microblogging competitor to Twitter and Facebook that will wrap up everyone’s experiences. Finally, look for Google and Apple to get into bidding wars over companies like Siri (wait until you see what they’ve done next week).

So, we’ve seen how Steve Jobs is setting the trends for the industry. I can’t wait to see how Google puts together its machine to compete.

One hint? There was no talk of wireless synching between iPhone and iPad. Why not? Compare to when I got my Google Nexus One phone. I entered in my email address and all my apps magically appeared. THAT gives you a hint of how Google is going to hit at Apple.

Oh, and one other weakness Apple has? Apple is clueless about social software. Google isn’t all that great either, but it is a world ahead of Apple. So, look at Google to make some major social networking moves this year to make its ecosystem a lot more interesting to the Facebook generation.

Onward, now that all the hype is done and you’ve seen it, any other ideas? I’m off to meet with iPhone game developers to get their reactions, talk to you later after I get home.

To answer Michael Gartenberg’s question, I see Microsoft as a solid loser in today’s announcements and a decent pitch has just been thrown over the plate in Google’s direction, so we’ll see if they can hit it out of the park or will Google whiff it?

As a man/guy/boy you must only forward this to the guys you know who is trustable and does not leak to women.

What is your favourite body part(s) of a woman?

These are the multiple choice answers.
a. Hair = Captain America
b. Eyes = Batman
c. Lips = Iron Man
d. Neck area (clavicle area) = Superman
e. Boobies = Wolverine
f. Tummy = Incredible Hulk
g. Hip = Spiderman
h. Legs = Robin
i. Feet = Daredevil

Eg: If your favourite body part of a woman is the boobies, update your status with like this : ‘’Wolverine!!!! XD’’
If you have more than one preference, it is okay to do so. If your preference changes the following day, simply change your status. We would like to keep this going as long as we can.
This is the substitution answer which supposed to be on the Men Facebook update. Please don’t be an idiot answering the direct questions. Answer only the subs instead.
To ensure that this won’t be on Google as they were trying to search it, you must only leak this to men

PLEASE UPDATE YOUR STATUS

Download and upload the following to your /js folder:

TwitterWidget

Open pligg.tpl, locate /body and add the following before:

var rpnetTwitAttrs = {
</script>
{/literal}

make sure you change the domain.com to whatever your url is. The values for “username” can be changed to whatever Twitter id’s you want to display.

Open sidebar.tpl and add the following line where you want the stream to appear:

{if $pagename neq “story”}{assign var=sidebar_module value=”twitterstream”}{include file=$the_template_sidebar_modules.”/wrapper.tpl”}{/if}

Save and close.

Now, create a file called twitterstream.tpl and add the following to it:

<div>
<a id=”rpnet_twTitle” href=”#”>Twitter Stream</a></div>
<div id=”rpnet_twitterWidget”>

Get your username listed here by <a title=”Submit a tutorial” href=”http://www.domain.com/submit”>submitting tutorials</a></div>

Again, be sure to change domain.com to whatever your url is.

Save and upload to your sidebar_modules directory.

That’s it.

Notes:

Because of Twitter’s API limitations on the number of API calls in one hour, the stream may appear blank after a while, depending on the traffic to your site, if it does, you will need to wait until the hour is up. I am hoping to have a cache feature added it to soon to prevent time outs.

Best way to Share your Pligg Story to Twitter is sharing through Tweetmeme.com , largest twitter Link Scaning Service,

You can add a Retweet Button to your Own Website , http://tweetmeme.com/about/retweet_button

You Have a Choice whether you get it from http://www.pligg.com/pro/catalog/modules/ultimate-retweet-103.html , or spend just few minutes and add some codes to your Pligg site. You can Donate your $8.75 and Support Haiti , rather than Paying for the “ULTIMATE RETWEET” module that Pligg Pro shop is selling.

It’s actually quite simple.

Open, link_summary.tpl, add where you want the button to appear:

{literal}
<script type=”text/javascript”><!–mce:0–></script>
<script src=”http://tweetmeme.com/i/scripts/button.js” type=”text/javascript”><!–mce:1–></script>
{/literal}

That’s it.

If you want the full size button, remove this line:

tweetmeme_style = ‘compact’;

Good Luck!

A while ago, YouTube launched a simple demo of an HTML5-based video player. Recently, we published a blog post on our pre-spring cleaning effort and your number one request was that YouTube do more with HTML5. Today, we’re introducing an experimental version of an HTML5-supported player.

HTML5 is a new web standard that is gaining popularity rapidly and adds many new features to your web experience. Most notably for YouTube users, HTML5 includes support for video and audio playback. This means that users with an HTML5 compatible browser, and support for the proper audio and video codecs can watch a video without needing to download a browser plugin.

Our support for HTML5 is an early experiment, and there are some limitations. HTML5 on YouTube doesn’t support videos with ads, captions, or annotations and it requires a browser that supports both the video tag and h.264 encoded video (currently that means Chrome, Safari, and ChromeFrame on Internet Explorer). We will be expanding the capabilities of the player in the future, so get ready for new and improved versions in the months to come.

To try it out, go to the HTML5 page via TestTube or visit this page and join the experiment. This will enable HTML5 video for your browser, provided that it’s one of the browsers mentioned above and fits in with the parameters we already referenced. (If you’ve opted in to other experiments, you may not get the HTML5 player.) You can also enable Feather watch (visit http://www.youtube.com/feather_beta) along with HTML5 video for an even simpler, faster YouTube experience.

We are very excited about HTML5 as an open standard and want to be part of moving HTML5 forward on the web.
