Google rolled out a new search interface Thursday, which its office described as “intelligent,” as part of its efforts to optimize the relevance of online queries.

After more than 6 months of testing, Google’s new interface is finally available to everyone. The new UI is gradually rolled out today and the changes are noticeable.

Google’s logo has vibrant colors, the search box is bigger and it now includes the search button, the links from the homepage are no longer underlined.

Google’s search results pages include a persistent sidebar that suggests specialized search engines, advanced filters and related searches. By default, Google only shows suggestions that are relevant to your query, but you can click on “more” to see other ways to refine the results.

“Today’s metamorphosis responds to the increasing richness of the web and the increasing power of search — revealing search tools on the left and updating the visual look and feel throughout. The top section of the new left-hand panel builds on Universal Search by suggesting the most relevant genres of results for your query and letting you seamlessly switch to these different types of results. Our expandable Search Options panel launched last spring brought many rich slice-and-dice tools to search. The new left-hand navigation showcases these tools and enables you to get a different view of your results. In addition to the left-hand side changes, we’ve updated our look and feel in terms of our color palette and our logo. These changes are slight, keeping our page minimalist and whimsical, but make our overall look more modern,” explains Marissa Mayer.

Some of the features aren’t completely new: when Google launched Universal Search in 2007, an important new feature was that Google suggested relevant specialized search engines. The suggestion bar has been removed after a couple of months and now it’s back as a vertical panel.

Google recently released Buzz, the company’s foray into the social networking world of microblogging. The service competes with other social sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Upon release, Buzz has been getting some criticism over its default privacy settings.

Google launched Buzz last Tuesday to the public after its announcement. The new service piggybacks off Gmail automatically so users do not have to update their email account. According to USA Today, Buzz has been receiving harsh criticism over its default privacy settings as it taps into your Gmail contacts list.

This integration was done for the most part under the radar causing many to raise concerns over the way it was implemented. Buzz leeches off your contacts list by auto-following those who you may email frequently with. This is similar to Twitter where users can follow someone.

The controversy is around the “auto-follow” feature that automatically links those who you email frequently with in your Gmail account to Buzz. When posting something onto Buzz everyone can see who is following you. Basically this allows strangers to see who you email with frequently.

The problem is that most people don’t want the world to know who they email frequently with. Google attempted to rectify the problem by revising the privacy settings so that users have to jump through a few more hoops before being able to post. Some critics have even asked Google to completely disable the “auto-follow” feature from their Gmail accounts as they feel it violates their email privacy.

Buzz is definitely a brilliant idea as it seamlessly provides a new service without having the users sign up for something new. This pretty much tackles the main entry barrier for most users. However, Google will need to be extra careful since the way Buzz is implemented into Gmail could potentially be a nightmare when dealing with hackers and spammers.

Once Google begins phasing out support for the archaic browser, Google Docs and Google Sites will be the first to go, but we should expect most Google products to become much less functional in IE6 in 2010.

Google writes:

“Many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet ExplorerInternet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers. We’re also going to begin phasing out our support, starting with Google Docs and Google Sites.
For a more in-depth look at why IE6 is a problematic browser, take a look at this post and then read up on a few more key reasons — think security and the fact that various governments are anti-IE .

First a disclaimer: Apple’s new iPad didn’t meet expectations, either mine, or the folks who I’ve been talking with on Twitter.

If my friends who work with or for Apple and in the press hadn’t built it up as mind blowing it wouldn’t have been disappointing, but this was a case where expectations got too big and what showed up didn’t meet them. Come on, no radically new way to interact? No Flash? No full OS? No Camera? No Verizon?

I was expecting a 10.0 and an 8.7 showed up.

But if you compare it to what I would have given Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer at CES (I would have scored that a 4.9, mostly because they showed clips of a really cool new Halo coming later this year) then it blows away the competition (which I expected when I wrote about Steve Ballmer’s Tablet bumbles last night).
.

<script type="text/javascript"

Watch Financial Times’ first hands on video and you get a sense of why it is so much better than Microsoft’s tablets, though. Apple delivered a consistent and deep touch experience.

But, now, where does today’s announcements leave Google and Microsoft?

I had Google’s Don Dodge (developer advocate) over to watch the Apple announcements today, and I saw several places where Apple was trying to limit Google’s ability to grow. Maps, calendar, Keynote (presentation software) and email on the iPad are all very pretty (we’ll see how good they are when we actually are able to use a device for more than 10 minutes) and compete very effectively against Google’s current offerings.

And against Microsoft I now see that Apple has just eviscerated Microsoft’s mobile strategy with a family of products that will be hard for Microsoft to compete against. But the damage to Microsoft goes further. I see Apple now going after the Xbox and putting a wall around Microsoft’s home entertainment dreams so it won’t be able to grow much further.

Many peoples are using iPhones to play games and watch videos more and more and the iPad will continue that trend. It’s clear to me, though, that Xbox has largely tapped out the home console market and will see slowing growth over next year or two and I know Microsoft has built a team around Zune to go after mobile entertainment (IE, a portable Xbox).

If Microsoft doesn’t get that shipped soon Apple will use the iPad to shore up its leverage with developers like Tapulous, who are building games for iPhone, and will ensure a whole range of games will only show up on Apple’s mobile devices and not on anything Microsoft will do. Microsoft must be very concerned by that.

Back to Google. I think the Chrome OS will prove very interesting as Google comes back against Apple with a device that costs less (Chrome OS is cheaper on hardware than Apple’s OS is, and also is cheaper in licensing fees, so I expect to see Chrome OS-based devices for around $200, instead of the $500 that Apple’s iPad starts at.

That’s where I expect to see major clashes over the next year as Google and Apple try to lock up movie, books, magazines, newspapers, and other media to make their systems better than the others. My predictions of how Google will respond? Look at Chrome OS and watch for new devices that compete with Apple head on. Look at Google Voice to be built onto. Look for Google Maps to even further extend their lead in the industry. Look for Google to come out with a microblogging competitor to Twitter and Facebook that will wrap up everyone’s experiences. Finally, look for Google and Apple to get into bidding wars over companies like Siri (wait until you see what they’ve done next week).

So, we’ve seen how Steve Jobs is setting the trends for the industry. I can’t wait to see how Google puts together its machine to compete.

One hint? There was no talk of wireless synching between iPhone and iPad. Why not? Compare to when I got my Google Nexus One phone. I entered in my email address and all my apps magically appeared. THAT gives you a hint of how Google is going to hit at Apple.

Oh, and one other weakness Apple has? Apple is clueless about social software. Google isn’t all that great either, but it is a world ahead of Apple. So, look at Google to make some major social networking moves this year to make its ecosystem a lot more interesting to the Facebook generation.

Onward, now that all the hype is done and you’ve seen it, any other ideas? I’m off to meet with iPhone game developers to get their reactions, talk to you later after I get home.

To answer Michael Gartenberg’s question, I see Microsoft as a solid loser in today’s announcements and a decent pitch has just been thrown over the plate in Google’s direction, so we’ll see if they can hit it out of the park or will Google whiff it?

In the immediate aftermath of a 7.0 earthquake that caused an unbelievable amount of destruction to Haiti’s capital, Google has been asked by relief organizations and users to show images of what’s actually happening on the ground.

In partnership with geospatial imagery company GeoEye, Google has just released a new layer for Google Earth showing post-earthquake devastation. Haiti was first added to Google Map Maker in response to hurricanes that wreaked havoc on the country more than a year ago. Read on for before-after pictures and details.

The Red Cross has stated that as many as 3 million Haitians have been affected by the earthquake, with as many as 100,000 deaths likely, according to Haiti’s prime minister. Since the quake’s epicenter was right off the capital city, Port-au-Prince, most of the official buildings, from government officials’ residences to jails and hospitals, have been significantly damaged or completely leveled.

Google’s been taking bad press about Chinese search result filtering for years, and now it looks like the company simply fed up: it’s going to stop filtering Google.cn and it may pull of out the country entirely. The move comes on the heels of coordinated attacks on Gmail, which Google says were aimed at accessing the accounts of prominent human rights activists — and Google also says that it’s not the only company suffering such attacks in China.

Now this is an interesting twist from the “Big G”, as the initial success PPC also known as Adwords was largely brought about by affiliate marketers and this would still form a large portion of Goggle’s revenue today. However Google is prepared to ‘clean up’ these areas even at its own cost, because its mission first and foremost, is to serve relevant valuable content to it users.

What does this mean if PPC is your only, primary or secondary forms of marketing and Google no longer permits your ads? Your traffic is going down, W A Y D O W N !

Consider this little statement (a favorite of mine) .

“Adwords are temporary, Website Search Engine Optimization is forever.”

Bottom-line If you want to protect your targeted website traffic and ultimately your livelihood from the whims of Google you need to know how the search engines work and how to take advantage of them with good set of Internet Search Engine Optimization techniques.

You need to have your site(s) optimized for organic traffic, not even Google can control all of that. Whilst it may be able to exert a significant influence on this it’s true, but not at the flick of the switch like it can with its own Adwords program.

The knowledge of any policy adjustment is regard to organic search will circulate the community in advance and it will also take time to take effect. So if your site’s prepared and setup for SEO you will be able to adjust where required, well in advance – creating a nice competitive advantage over those that aren’t. If it’s not, well… don’t say I didn’t warn you!

With today’s technology driven society, having a website for your business is a necessity. Customers expect to be able to search the internet and find their preferred business online. However, simply just owning website is not sufficient. You need to expose your website to your potential customers such that they are able to find it when searching online. The ultimate way of achieving this is through internet search engine optimization (SEO) which allows your website to rank in search results.

A well designed internet search engine optimized site will provide you with the opportunity to rank on page 1 of the search engines, expose your business to your potential customers, drive targeted web traffic to your site and ultimately improve your profits. The higher your site ranks, the more likely your potential customers will click on it, thus your aim is to rank as high as possible.

3 WAYS TO PROGRESS YOUR INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

1. Keyword Research for SEO

Choose the keywords you want to rank for carefully. When a customer searches using one of these keywords, you want to display on page 1 of that search engine. Your internet search engine optimization strategy should include multiple keywords for each page in your site. Furthermore, your keywords should be at least two words in length as this drives more targeted web traffic to your site. For example, rather than optimizing your site for “marketing”, consider using “internet marketing specialist.”

There are both paid and free tools available to conduct a thorough analysis of the most relevant keywords to use in your internet search engine optimization efforts in order to direct targeted web traffic.

2. Keyword Frequency and Location

Keyword density and location on your website play an important role in internet search engine optimization. The higher your keywords are on your page, the better your ranking and the more targeted web traffic you will receive. Include your keywords in your page title and in the first few paragraphs of the page.

Another thing to consider is your keyword frequency. Search engines observe how often you mention the term relative to the rest of the words on the page. The higher your keyword density percentage, the higher your page ranking. It is important to note though, that search engines pay attention to keyword spamming (excessive use of a keyword) in an attempt to rank for that keyword just to get targeted web traffic. Search engines that detect spamming are likely to exclude your site in their results and may even ban your site permanently. Deliberate spamming is ethically incorrect; therefore exclude it from your SEO strategy.

3. SEO Rewards Relevant Content

Be sure that your page reflects the keywords that your potential customers are searching for. Your content should also be of sufficient value that customers find it useful in relation to their search.

The use of large graphics is not recommended as this reduces the open speed of your website. Whilst they may look nice, they inhibit your internet search engine optimization efficiency.

Relevant content also refers to the use of alternative keywords, or keyword variations. For example, when using “internet marketing specialist” you can also use “online marketing expert”. This approach keeps your website relevant yet reduces your risk of spamming.

Implementing a well thought out internet search engine optimization plan can have a massive impact on your business by directing more targeted web traffic to your site. Remember though that you are not only trying to please the search engines, but also the customers that are visiting your website. Aim for a balance between the ultimate customer experience and what the search engines want.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has confirmed its purchase of VOIP startup Gizmo5. The deal had been rumored earlier this week. In a short post on the Google Voice blog, Google said no new features would immediately come to its products, but it did say that Gizmo5’s engineers would join the Google Voice team to “continue improving the Google Voice and Gizmo5 experience.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although TechCrunch—which first reported that Google had purchased the startup—put the purchase price at $30 million. Gizmo5 had raised $6 million in a round of funding three years ago.

In September, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said the company was once again on the acquisition trail. He obviously was not kidding. After a streak of eleven months without a single purchase, Google has now bought up four companies in the last four months: video compression firm On2, “captcha” startup reCaptcha, mobile ad network adMob, and Gizmo5.

So, why might Google want Gizmo5? TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington suggested earlier this week that Google made the buy because Gizmo5’s VoIP service allows voice call connections between computers and real phones, something Google Talk doesn’t. The acquisition and Gizmo5 integration could also serve as a tidy way to transform Google Voice and Google Talk into a unified VoIP communications service—and true Skype rival.

Google Personalised Search Results

The results you see when you search Google may not be the same as what other people are seeing. You may think your website ranks well when you conduct a search, but you may be looking at the search results through rose tinted glasses. Google will be personalising the results you get based on your your recent search history, your Google Account web searching history, and your location. In other words, Google tracks what you’ve searched for recently, it monitors the pages that you clicked on, and it learns your preferences. And Google is personalising these results whether you are logged into your Google account or not. This can be misleading for those of you who think you are ranking well in Google.

What may be happening is that you are ranking well in your own personalised set of results but these may be quite different to the to the results being seen by the rest of the world. Let’s look at an example. When you’re logged into your Google account and conduct a search, keep an eye on the top right corner where Google will alert you to when it is personalising the results as a results of your web searching history: Google Personalised Search Results When does Google personalise your results? Not all the time, but it does let you know when signficant adjustments have been made. However, at a recent SMX conference, Google indicated that even if the message doesn’t appear, it still may have made slight tweaks regarding the order of the results you are seeing. Why not click through and take a look at your personalised results. This personalisation extends to the order or position of the sites being displayed, but also can influence whether you are seeing site links or not. When I’m logged into my Google account I see site links for some websites, but when I’m logged out they disappear.

And of course, some of you may be electing to rearrange your search result using Google’s Search Wiki function, which allows you to promote or delete websites from the search results. This does not appear to have any impact on overall search results at this stage, but it is purely a way of sharing your search experiences. If you would like a tool that “depersonalises” the search results, then try this: Yoast’s disable personalised search plugin Keep in mind however, that whilst you are disabling these results, your prospective customers will have their own search history, influencing their own results!

What if last month Google made the entire web social, yet most people – and companies – didn’t seem to notice? Because that’s what happened with the launch of [wikipop]Google Sidewiki[/wikipop] and the reaction – other than in some corners of the blogosphere – was a loud, distracted yawn.

Is it because everyone now expects the web to be social or is it because the full implications of Google Sidewiki have yet to fully realized?

I tend to think it is the latter.

This was the reaction of the New York Times Bits blog: “Google is rolling out a new service on Wednesday that will allow users to post notes alongside Web sites that can be read by other users.”

That’s putting it mildly. What about the part where web site owners don’t control the comments? They can’t edit them. They can’t delete them. And anybody who has Sidewiki will be able to read them in there entirety be they raving reviews or scathing criticisms. It’s what every web operator needs – a public place for the crazies to leave their messages – permanently.

Google has basically made every single web page social – and that’s a paradigm shift of earthquake portions for brands, brand managers and communicators.

It’s a world where the third Sidewiki entry on the YouTube home page reads: “The new channel editor for you tube sucks. It’s gawd awful, please take that shit off.”

I’m sure that’s exactly the kind of intelligent discourse YouTube’s brand managers are looking for on the front page of their web site – for all to see.

Two analysts who do get the power of Sidewiki are Jeremiah Owyang and Charlene Li of Altimeter Group. They wrote a post yesterday addressing Google’s “stealth” move into social media by quietly making the web social (thereby weakening the grip of large social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook).

The post goes on to say:

“This is the stealth threat — that today’s social networks won’t really be losing share to the “Google network,” but rather, that they will become slowly less relevant as EVERYTHING gets social thanks to advances by Google. Their end goal? Google’s social network is designed to exist everywhere –not be centralized in any one location.”

That’s it in a nutshell.

So far the response by web owners and companies have been surprisingly muted. The mainstream press has done few hard-hitting analysis on Sidewiki. Is it because Sidewiki hasn’t reached critical mass yet?

What do you think?

First Day of Spring

Hidden behind the inconspicuous link “Show options…” on the Google search engine result pages, lie a large number of new tools for refining search results.

Some two years ago Google (GOOG) introduced Universal Search, which essentially means that the search results combine various types of content: web, images, video, news and blogs.

The good thing about this is that inexperienced searchers may, at once glance, see results of all these types.

Universal Search also fulfills the Google credo of keeping search engine result pages simple and uncluttered.

However, it does make it harder for searchers to focus their search on one type of information.

Search options

If you click on the “Show options” link (which you find right under the Google logo on the English language versions of Google), Google will add a left hand column to the result page.

It looks a little bit like the one Ask had before they decided to become more like Google.

The column presents four sections with tools for refining your search. The first bullet point on each section is the default choice for a regular search.

When you click on one of the options, Google will filter the results accordingly, adding new options to the menu according to what kind of information you are looking for. If you click on video, Google will — for instance — add options for different durations.

Types of sources

All results

Video
(restricts results to videos indexed by Google Video Search, including YouTube)

Forums
(restricts results to information found in discussion forums)

Reviews
(restricts results to pages that Google believe contain reviews of products, sites or services. These are most likely identified by Google finding the word “review” on the page.

Note that Google does not include options for News or Images, probably because these are options listed at the very top of the pages.

Why Google has singled out Videos for the option list, in spite of the fact that Videos are listed at the top of the page as well is unclear. The results are not identical!

Moreover, we find it baffling that Blogs are not included as a separate options. To restrict results to blogs you have to click on the “more” link at the top of the page, which is far from intuitive.

This section also presents the most glaring omission, namely real time search from social media.

We would have liked to see an option that mixed results from Twitter and other microblogs with the latest blog search results, which is why we believe Google acquiring Twitter would be a good thing.

Restrict result by time

The next section focuses on the timeline:

Any time
(i.e. default search results)

Recent results
(restricts results to information found in the last few hours)

Past 24 hours

Past week

Past year

Bullet point two and three could be considered some kind of news search function, but while the Google News Search only includes results from hand picked sites, these results seem to give you data from various Google indexes, at least when you have selected “All results” in section 1.

More info on each hit

The next section is basically an option that lets you decide how Google is presenting the results. That being said, the ranking of results may be different for the different options.

Standard results
(gives you a mix of results from different Google indexes in the traditional way: headline, snippet and URL)

Images from the page
(presents one or two images from each web page listed)

More text
(is identical to Standard results, but adds longer snippets from the page)

Especially the last option might be helpful, as it might save you from visiting a large number of web pages in order to identify the most relevant ones.

We would love to have thumbnail viwe of the search results as an option as well.

Refining the search query

The final section gives you ways of exploring the web by helping you rephrase the query.

Standard view

Related searches
(adds a list of alternative search queries at the top)

Wonder Wheel
(adds a “wheel” with subtopics at the end of the spokes. Click on one of the subtopics and Google will narrow your search accordingly)

Timeline
(lets you restrict your search result to a certain publication date or a date in history. A search for “Chinese Art” may, for instance, gives you pages about art from 3000BC, while you may narrow a search for “search engine marketing” to the year of 2004.)

All in all we think Google has done great job with developing these options.

Rich snippets

Google has also added so called “Rich Snippets” to some search results.

As Google puts it:

“Rich Snippets provide summary information, including important page-specific attributes, to help you quickly identify the relevance of your results.”

The rich snippets appear, like the old fashioned text snippets, below the title of the search result and may include review information, prices, information that helps you distinguish between people and more.

To display Rich Snippets, Google looks for markup formats (microformats and RDFa) that you can add to your own web pages. The Google Blog has more on how you can do that.

Google Squared

Google is also planning another new alternative way of presenting search results called Google Squared.

Google Squared will present results in a spreadsheet format that can be edited and saved. In other words: You may use the search results as you would a database.

Today, Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a Google-led consortium of companies developing mobile-phone software Android, announced 14 new members, these three huge companies among them. Other impressive additions include AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc., Atheros Communications, Borqs, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Teleca AB and Toshiba Corporation.

What does it all mean? One, that sales of the first Android-based phone, the T-Mobile G1, must be going very well. Only available for sale since this fall, the iPhone-like device made by long-time OHA member HTC is expected to sell around 500,000 units this year. Now, handset makers like new member Ericsson, which plans to release its Android device in mid-2009, want in on the action — particularly since the cost of Android-based handsets is lower than that of phones made with operating systems from Nokia and Microsoft, according to researcher NPD Group. Motorola recently announced it’s going to focus on Android come next year as well.

Second, and most important, carriers and handset makers who’ve just joined the Alliance are, in effect, expressing their dissatisfaction with Android’s long-established rivals, Nokia’s Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software. And no wonder. Symbian is going through a major restructuring, and it’s unclear exactly what it will look like come next year. Microsoft has been losing developer interest, sources tell me.

The bottom line: Until today, Android’s future looked uncertain. Only a minor handset maker, HTC, was making Android-based phones. T-Mobile was the only carrier globally to offer G1, and only in a few markets, including the U.S. Motorola’s support helped but not that much, as the company is in a fragile financial state, and its own future is unclear. That’s why today’s announcement is so important. Vodafone’s support is huge. The carrier has 280 million customers worldwide. Sony Ericsson’s involvement is important as well (larger handset makers like LG are already part of the Alliance). Clearly, big guns are joining this game, and lining up their pawns on Google’s side.

A side note: I find it interesting to see Austek and Toshiba in the new members list. It’s long been expected that Android will be used not only in phones but also in netbooks, which are tiny laptops with screens of less than 10.2 inches. Austek is the largest player in the netbooks category, and today’s announcement could indicate that Android-based netbooks may be coming out, and soon.
