The number of excellent resources that have come out since the beginning of the year on attracting links and building traffic has really mushroomed. Plus there are some timeless classics that are still very relevant today.

I think it makes sense to compile the very best in one handy location and share it, so here’s my entire collection. If I missed your link and traffic resource let me know and I’ll take a look.

Now, it doesn’t matter if you like the term “link baiting” or not. It’s the process that one goes through to attract links that matters, not whether you prefer to think of your content as bait for links. I like to think that creating content that increases web traffic and builds links simply falls under the general social media optimization marketing buzz phrase that is gaining in popularity.

<script type="text/javascript"

So, here’s your ultimate “how to” guide to creating content that attracts links and drives traffic in the social media environment:

“Best practices” is one of those dry as dust phrases that conjures up a consultant orating at you and a dozen co-workers sitting in uncomfortable chairs, each one wishing you could go back to work. If you missed Adam Audette’s interesting article entitled, “SEO ‘Best Practices’ Are Bunk,” you should pull up a chair and follow the link to read it. (I’ll wait right here.) Adam alluded to my Do It Wrong Quickly concept as a way to do things right (if that isn’t an oxymoron in itself), and on the whole I think he is on the right track. His title is a bit audacious (link-baiting must not be a best practice), but what he is saying is important for anyone in Internet marketing, not just organic search.

The problem with the “best practices” concept is that it assumes a relatively static and homogeneous world, where situations are mostly the same from company to company, and they don’t change that fast. Neither is true in Internet marketing.

We all know how fast the Internet changes. If you ever discover a best practice, just wait ten minutes and it will be outdated. But we often overlook how unique our companies are. We think that there is some magical success place that other companies have arrived at, and we just need to get there and we can relax. Wrong.

The point of Do It Wrong Quickly is to try things and then fix them. For that, you need a feedback loop—usually in the form of a metric that tells you that your business is succeeding, such as sales (online or offline). When you try something new, you see whether sales go up. If they do, do it some more. If not…

But people so want the best practices so they don’t have to think. And they especially want some benchmark that tells them they got it right and don’t have to focus on it anymore. I’ve often had people ask me, “What’s a good conversion rate?” And my answer is, “Higher than what you had yesterday.” Snarky, yes, but also true. It doesn’t make any sense for you to benchmark your company against your competitors, because they probably aren’t as comparable to you as you think. Instead, you need to keep your eye on your own business, and continually modify what you are doing to see what works better.

The truth is that you never stop experimenting because the Internet keeps changing, your company keeps changing, your competitors keep changing, and most importantly of all, your customers keep changing. What most people call best practices are no more than rules of thumb—you can think of them as a smart place to begin your experimentation. But they are nothing more than that, in most cases. They are a jumping off point for you to start your improvement process.

If you continually focus on creating a better feedback loop and you make your decisions based on how they fare with that feedback, you’ll end up doing something far better than implementing someone’s hackneyed idea of best practices. You’ll do what’s best for your company with your customers.

And then tomorrow, you’ll try another experiment to see if your best practices can be made even better.

Benjamin Franklin said that…
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

The field of professional Website Search Engine Optimization is no different.

Guaranteed SEO is not just a technical approach to get you on the first page of Google for a certain keyword or key phrase.

If your business approaches it from that angle you might never see the importance of Internet search engine optimization or achieve anything close to organic targeted web traffic.

Think of proactively marketing yourself online as creating little pieces of dust floating around online eventually connecting directly to your brand or business.

If you connect all those little pieces of dust they all funnel down to your website creating many little pathways to your website, the bigger the network of dust the more opportunity for really becoming visible online in front of your target audience. This network takes some time to build but once it is built, a website can see a nice steady stream of traffic and if done correctly, it will be qualified targeted website traffic.

This approach should not be viewed as just something technical to manipulate search results but rather as a long term internet marketing plan with the goal of rankings as a byproduct but not the only byproduct. Perhaps this misunderstanding is a hangover from the “meta tag” stuffing days of the late nineties and early 2000’s when this practice could rank a porn site for the word “Smithsonian”. Nowadays much more effort is required for professional SEO.

As with most things in this world if you have a way of prioritizing what to do and when, instead of trial and error then you optimize your efforts and reap the results sooner.
SEO will always take time to really ramp up and work correctly, so it is important to realize that it is a strategic investment of time and money not dissimilar from many other marketing or business investments.

Investment into an online presence or business website is very important. Equally as important to an offline “bricks and mortar” business investment. It will bring returns if its done correctly and not just in the form of search engine rankings, which many think is the way to gauge if your online marketing campaign is actually working.

Real rewards come from bloggers writing about your business and products or perhaps potential customers contacting you via social networks for example. This will bring a huge increase in your website activity and does not happen by accident, it will be as a direct result of your SEO efforts and the time for rankings to of been ‘awarded’ from the search engines. It is critically important to realize that search engine optimization is a long term approach that does require some patience and ability to think outside the box.

Yes, you may of heard about it already. It’s not a new thing that certain policies are reviewed and this is just the latest one of those, for sure. It is though fairly strategic in nature and, worth considering the implications that it could have for your targeted web traffic.

Google has started coming down hard on affiliate advertisers using PPC. Lets understand why? It’s because (in the eyes of google) affiliates offer little or no value on their sites. The users experience is degraded and therefore Google is degraded. Something that is against the Google philosophy obviously.

And it’s not only limited to affiliates, some niche’s such as “Acai berry”, “Weight loss” and Home Business are also being heavily scrutinized and slapped at slightest lack of credibility.

Now this is an interesting twist from the “Big G”, as the initial success PPC also known as Adwords was largely brought about by affiliate marketers and this would still form a large portion of Goggle’s revenue today. However Google is prepared to ‘clean up’ these areas even at its own cost, because its mission first and foremost, is to serve relevant valuable content to it users.

What does this mean if PPC is your only, primary or secondary forms of marketing and Google no longer permits your ads? Your traffic is going down, W A Y D O W N !

Consider this little statement (a favorite of mine) .

“Adwords are temporary, Website Search Engine Optimization is forever.”

Bottom-line If you want to protect your targeted website traffic and ultimately your livelihood from the whims of Google you need to know how the search engines work and how to take advantage of them with good set of Internet Search Engine Optimization techniques.

You need to have your site(s) optimized for organic traffic, not even Google can control all of that. Whilst it may be able to exert a significant influence on this it’s true, but not at the flick of the switch like it can with its own Adwords program.

The knowledge of any policy adjustment is regard to organic search will circulate the community in advance and it will also take time to take effect. So if your site’s prepared and setup for SEO you will be able to adjust where required, well in advance – creating a nice competitive advantage over those that aren’t. If it’s not, well… don’t say I didn’t warn you!

With today’s technology driven society, having a website for your business is a necessity. Customers expect to be able to search the internet and find their preferred business online. However, simply just owning website is not sufficient. You need to expose your website to your potential customers such that they are able to find it when searching online. The ultimate way of achieving this is through internet search engine optimization (SEO) which allows your website to rank in search results.

A well designed internet search engine optimized site will provide you with the opportunity to rank on page 1 of the search engines, expose your business to your potential customers, drive targeted web traffic to your site and ultimately improve your profits. The higher your site ranks, the more likely your potential customers will click on it, thus your aim is to rank as high as possible.

3 WAYS TO PROGRESS YOUR INTERNET SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION (SEO)

1. Keyword Research for SEO

Choose the keywords you want to rank for carefully. When a customer searches using one of these keywords, you want to display on page 1 of that search engine. Your internet search engine optimization strategy should include multiple keywords for each page in your site. Furthermore, your keywords should be at least two words in length as this drives more targeted web traffic to your site. For example, rather than optimizing your site for “marketing”, consider using “internet marketing specialist.”

There are both paid and free tools available to conduct a thorough analysis of the most relevant keywords to use in your internet search engine optimization efforts in order to direct targeted web traffic.

2. Keyword Frequency and Location

Keyword density and location on your website play an important role in internet search engine optimization. The higher your keywords are on your page, the better your ranking and the more targeted web traffic you will receive. Include your keywords in your page title and in the first few paragraphs of the page.

Another thing to consider is your keyword frequency. Search engines observe how often you mention the term relative to the rest of the words on the page. The higher your keyword density percentage, the higher your page ranking. It is important to note though, that search engines pay attention to keyword spamming (excessive use of a keyword) in an attempt to rank for that keyword just to get targeted web traffic. Search engines that detect spamming are likely to exclude your site in their results and may even ban your site permanently. Deliberate spamming is ethically incorrect; therefore exclude it from your SEO strategy.

3. SEO Rewards Relevant Content

Be sure that your page reflects the keywords that your potential customers are searching for. Your content should also be of sufficient value that customers find it useful in relation to their search.

The use of large graphics is not recommended as this reduces the open speed of your website. Whilst they may look nice, they inhibit your internet search engine optimization efficiency.

Relevant content also refers to the use of alternative keywords, or keyword variations. For example, when using “internet marketing specialist” you can also use “online marketing expert”. This approach keeps your website relevant yet reduces your risk of spamming.

Implementing a well thought out internet search engine optimization plan can have a massive impact on your business by directing more targeted web traffic to your site. Remember though that you are not only trying to please the search engines, but also the customers that are visiting your website. Aim for a balance between the ultimate customer experience and what the search engines want.

I thought I would do some research and see how the collective wisdom of the industry has changed with what matter to get a page search engine optimized (SEO). Use this top ten list if you already have a site ranked and want to see what you can implement to get your ranking higher.

How to search engine optimize your Joomla website in 10 easy steps.

1. Keyword Use in Title Tag

and appear in the blue bar of your browser. The number one factor in ranking a page on search engines is the title tag. These are the words in the source of a page in

Choose the title of an article very carefully. Joomla will use the title of the article in the title tag (what appears in the blue bar). It will also be the text used in any insite links (see #5 and 6)

2. Anchor Text of Inbound Link

Anchor text is the text that appear underlined and in blue (unless its been styled) for a link from one webpage to another.

Try to get some inbound links to your article using the keywords you want to be ranked for. Two ways are to do this are through online press services such as PRweb.com or simply by networking.

3. Global Link Popularity of Site (PageRank)

How many pages are linking to your page is called link popularity, or in Google, PageRank.

The more sites link to you, the better. Joomla is a CMS that helps you add content quickly. Create one quality content page per day. Quality content is the most important factor to getting bound links. For a site that will perform well, you eventually need 200 odd pages of content. This is the important point. QUICK SEO IS DEAD. The only way to perform well in SEO now is to have a rich content site.

4. Age of Site

When was the domain of the site registered?

Nothing you can do about this, but there is evidence that suggests that how long you have your domain registered for makes a difference (spam sites are not registered for long). Go and extend your domain registration for a couple of years.

5. Link Popularity within the Site

This is the number of links to the page from inside your own domain.

Because of #2, its critical that you link to articles from within your site using the right anchor text. Make sure that you:

Use the linked titles setting

Make good used of the Most Read, Related Items and Latest News modules.

Have a sitemap component linked to right from your homepage

6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links and Popularity of Linking Site

Its important that you get quality inbound links. This means they have to be from a site that is topically related to your, and one that has a high PageRank.

Its worth submitting once to directories (then forget about it).

Type related:www.yoursite.com into google and contact the top 20 returns for links.Link Popularity of Site in Topic Community

Make sure you have a blog on your site, and network with others in your topical community. Make sure you frequently link to other blogs in your topical community.

7. Keyword Use in Body Text

The keyword density of the phrase you are optimizing for in the content of the page. Still important, the German study from Sistrix identified some interesting results.

Targeted keywords in the first and last paragraphs. There is a simple trick here, write your quality content, and then use the tool of your choice to find the keyword density. THEN, take the top three words and add them to the meta keywords in the parameters part of the page (in Joomla admin). This is somewhat backwards for some maybe, it optimizes a page for what you actually wrote, rather than trying to write a page optimized for certain words (which I always find difficult).

Keywords in H2-H6 headline tags seem to have an influence on the rankings while keywords in H1 headline tags seem to be getting less valuable. Modify the output of the core content component through a template override file.

Using keywords in bold or strong tags – slight effect, same with img alt tags and filenames.

You want more?? (let me guess !) NO.. is it?

Google Personalised Search Results

The results you see when you search Google may not be the same as what other people are seeing. You may think your website ranks well when you conduct a search, but you may be looking at the search results through rose tinted glasses. Google will be personalising the results you get based on your your recent search history, your Google Account web searching history, and your location. In other words, Google tracks what you’ve searched for recently, it monitors the pages that you clicked on, and it learns your preferences. And Google is personalising these results whether you are logged into your Google account or not. This can be misleading for those of you who think you are ranking well in Google.

What may be happening is that you are ranking well in your own personalised set of results but these may be quite different to the to the results being seen by the rest of the world. Let’s look at an example. When you’re logged into your Google account and conduct a search, keep an eye on the top right corner where Google will alert you to when it is personalising the results as a results of your web searching history: Google Personalised Search Results When does Google personalise your results? Not all the time, but it does let you know when signficant adjustments have been made. However, at a recent SMX conference, Google indicated that even if the message doesn’t appear, it still may have made slight tweaks regarding the order of the results you are seeing. Why not click through and take a look at your personalised results. This personalisation extends to the order or position of the sites being displayed, but also can influence whether you are seeing site links or not. When I’m logged into my Google account I see site links for some websites, but when I’m logged out they disappear.

And of course, some of you may be electing to rearrange your search result using Google’s Search Wiki function, which allows you to promote or delete websites from the search results. This does not appear to have any impact on overall search results at this stage, but it is purely a way of sharing your search experiences. If you would like a tool that “depersonalises” the search results, then try this: Yoast’s disable personalised search plugin Keep in mind however, that whilst you are disabling these results, your prospective customers will have their own search history, influencing their own results!
