Earlybird, (@earlybird), just tweeted its first Twitter-exclusive offer today. According to the Twitter Blog:

“Today, we’re excited to launch the first @earlybird Exclusive Offer, in partnership with The Walt Disney Studios,” the site said. “For a limited time, @earlybird followers in the U.S. can get a special deal on tickets for “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” a new feature film from Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films that opens in theaters today.”

Lance Ulanoff is on record that Earlybird is a far better idea to make money than Promoted Tweets.

In the interview, which touched on numerous topics including the future of social gaming on Facebook, Zuckerberg’s plans for the Facebook Credits payment system, and Facebook’s current financials, Zuckerberg admitted that he personally had “paid too much attention” to Twitter over the course of the past few years. According to Zuckerberg:

“At first I think we learned that they do a lot of things really well. It’s a very nice, simple service. They do one thing really well – that’s powerful.

“I think the main thing was we looked at their growth rate and – well, we saw our exponential growth rate continue for a very long period of time, and it still does at a super-linear rate, though not quite 3% a week any more. I looked at their rate and thought if this continues for 12 months or 18 months, then in a year they’re going to be bigger than us. I guess I extrapolated too much from our own experience of what was possible, but it just turned out that that their growth rate was kind of unnatural.”

Zuckerberg is certainly correct when he says that Twitter’s growth rate wasn’t sustainable – and he isn’t even mentioning the fact that a significant portion of Twitter’s massive growth rate came either from spammers who create hundreds of accounts at a time, or from people who try the service, use it for a few days, and then quit. The latter group accounts for a significant proportion of new Twitter accounts.

To say that Zuckerberg “paid too much attention” to Twitter is a bit of an understatement. Over the last two years, Facebook has taken significant steps toward emulating Twitter’s functionality, most notably pushing their once-private social network towards a more public system, notably “recommending” to users during privacy overhauls that they expose much of the private information that they had previously held back.

From the tone of Zuckerberg’s comments, and considering the new direction that Facebook appears to be taking (namely paying too much attention to Foursquare and other locational “check in” services), it seems that the Facebook founder’s obsession with microblogging is waning. What that bodes for the future of the world’s largest social network is unclear, but one thing you can count on is that although Zuckerberg might not be focusing too closely on Twitter, he’s definitely still got his eyes on it.

As PostRank found out in a study of Buzz over 60% of the traffic is from Twitter accounts. I mean seriously people if all you are going to do is flood Buzz with your already boring crap on Twitter and then irritate me to follow you on both – go find a life somewhere else.

I have lost count of the number of follow request that when I go and check them out are nothing but Twitter messages. It gets even worse with they are Twitter messages from spammers and SEO marketing crap. Ya that make for a good user experience.

Not to be outdone the next highest use of Buzz apparently comes from bots, the kind used to spew out automated alerts from feeds. Like this was any surprise but between the bots and Twitter crap they account for 90% of Buzz traffic.

And to think that Google is getting hauled over the coals over privacy concerns. Ya I guess all those bots are upset about being found out.

It appears the feature is live for everyone. To try it, just go to a friend’s posted item in your news feed, click “share,” and you’ll see a “via [your friend’s name]” (with an option to remove it). Once shared, the item will appear on your profile, with a via link that points to your friend’s profile. Your friends will also see the item in their News Feeds, creating the viral loop that is the Twitter retweet.

Currently, the feature only works for posted links – you can’t “via” someone else’s status update or photo. Nonetheless, given the most visible use of retweets on Twitter is links, with aggregators like Tweetmeme tracking which stories get retweeted the most, it’s a big move for Facebook that makes its service even more Twitter-like.

Where the feature goes from here, we’re not sure, but given the social network’s ambition to make more and more of what you post public, it’s clearly another attempt to become more relevant in the world of real-time news, search, and information. Whether or not users respond and start posting “shared via links” (is that what we call them?) will also remain to be seen.

You are correct and I apologise. Your last project was actually both commercially viable and original. Unfortunately the part that was commercially viable was not original, and the part that was original was not commercially viable.

I would no doubt find your ideas more ‘cutting edge’ and original if I had traveled forward in time from the 1950’s but as it stands, your ideas for technology based projects, that have already been put into application by other people several years before you thought of them, fail to generate the enthusiasm they possibly deserve. Having said that though, if I had traveled forward in time, my time machine would probably put your peer to peer networking technology to shame as not only would it have commercial viability, but also an awesome logo and accompanying pie charts.

Regardless, I have, as requested, attached a logo that represents not only the peer to peer networking project you are currently working on, but working with you in general.

So you have invented Twitter. Congratulations. This is where that time machine would definitely have come in quite handy.

When I was about twelve, I read that time slows down when approaching the speed of light so I constructed a time machine by securing my father’s portable generator to the back of my mini-bike with rope and attaching the drive belt to the back wheel. Unfortunately, instead of traveling through time and finding myself in the future, I traveled about fifty metres along the footpath at 200mph before finding myself in a bush. When asked by the nurse filling out the hospital accident report “Cause of accident?” I stated ‘time travel attempt’ but she wrote down ’stupidity’.

If I did have a working time machine, the first thing I would do is go back four days and tell myself to read the warning on the hair removal cream packaging where it recommends not using on sensitive areas. I would then travel several months back to warn myself against agreeing to do copious amounts of design work for an old man wieding the business plan equivalent of a retarded child poking itself in the eye with a spoon, before finally traveling back to 1982 and explaining to myself the long term photographic repercussions of going to the hairdresser and asking for a haircut exactly like Simon LeBon’s the day before a large family gathering.

Usually when people don’t ask me to design them a logo, pie charts or website, I, in return, do not ask them to paint my apartment, drive me to the airport, represent me in court or whatever it is they do for a living. DePaul University is now offering a course in its journalism department called “Digital Editing: From Breaking News to Tweets.” According to WBBM 770, “It will focus on how to confirm and evaluate reports by citizen journalists, particularly in cases of breaking news. The class will also help students learn how to sort through information on the Web for story tips and context.”

According to the university, the course, taught by DePaul alumnus and Chicago Tribune “digital intern” Craig Kanalley, “is believed to be the first college-level journalism course focused solely on Twitter and its applications.”

Frivolous? Twitter may not be the second coming that its proponents often profess it to be, but the site has definitely become the de facto medium by which most big news is broken. Eagle-eyed Twitter followers are often the first to hear about current events as they’re happening. Of course, Twitter is also legendary for spreading misinformation and lots of it. Just ask Jeff Goldblum, who is not dead.

And despite Twitter’s notorious unreliability, many over-eager reporters are more than happy to repeat anything published there as fact. Maybe a class on how to use a little common sense in evaluating a tweet isn’t such a bad idea.

The focus is on tweets containing links, with the goal of giving you a window into content being shared on your watched topics by people you don’t necessarily follow. A service from the folks at social news site Mixx , TweetMixx lets you log in with your Twitter account via OAuth and add a set of your interests to follow on Twitter. It’s more intelligent than simply a saved search though — it’s unclear what algorithm they use to identify what falls into “tech” or “gaming” for example, but so far the results seem quite accurate for the topics we’ve followed.

You can also get a view of the links being shared by just the people you follow (and a toggle to view all tweets regardless of whether or not they contain links), with the same link preview service displayed in the middle column. Like Facebook and Twitter Search behave, as new updates come in the site will notify you with a message at the top saying “There are more tweets to be read!” and a link to refresh the page.

In the far right column is a textbox for updating your own Twitter status which is standard throughout the “your interests” and “your friends” sections, creating a nice all-in-one dashboard for finding relevant content and sending it back out to your network if you wish.

A series of web sites fell like dominoes as[wikipop]Boomers[/wikipop] and [wikipop]GenXers[/wikipop] raced to verify the truth of the Jackson death rumors yesterday. Twitter, Wikipedia, tmz.com, latimes.com, and [wikipop]Google[/wikipop] News all reported outages, according to[wikipop]CNN[/wikipop] — which had problems itself with cnn.com.

Reportedly, 30 percent of Tweets were related to Jackson, and there was so much traffic that Iranian protesters couldn’t get to Twitter to update their news.

Even as of Friday noon EDT, 6 of the top 10 Twitter trending topics were related to Jackson.
