The activities relating to SEO can be categorized under two basic heads namely, On-page SEO and Off-Page SEO. In this article, we shall be covering the basic aspects of On-page SEO.
On-page SEO includes the content as well as the HTML code of a webpage that can be optimized in a manner such that Google (read: Search Engine) understands its context and hence shows it in the search results basis the relevant keywords.
While performing on-page SEO, there are eight different sections of your website that needs to be optimized. Let’s get started.
1. Use of Title Tags
The title tag is the element of HTML which is used on Title of the page. encase the title of the webpage. Each time you make a search on google, and the search results show up, the first line that shows up as the clickable headline for a given result is the title. It is supposed to be concise and relevant to the page.

Each web page shall have a different title tag.
2. Meta Description
Although, there are a couple of meta tags, with the changes in Google algorithms, the only meta tag concerning should be the “meta description tag.” Each time you make a search on google and the search results show up, the normal text information that shows up is the description.
More than the impact on ranking, it helps in making the user understand what your site is about, and hence they can make their decision whether they want to go ahead and click on it or not.

Note: Ensure the use of keywords in your meta description.
3. Use of Headings
Much like the headings that we have used here in this article, SEO headings are also used in the same manner. These headings are in order H1, H2, H3, H4, and so on. H1 being the page’s main heading. Rest of the headings are in descending order used for sub-headings, sub-subheadings and so on.

There is supposed to be one H1 tag on each page.
The number of rest of heading tags can vary.
Headings containing keywords can perform the best.
4. Use of Alt Tags
As discussed in the previous article, 9 things you should know to get your SEO game right, search engines are unable to index images, therefore the use of alt tags become important. The tag is basically used to describe the image.
Note: It’s a better practice to use relevant names over random names for saving images that are to be uploaded, implying rosebunch.jpg in place of image.jpg.
For an image of a bunch of 12 Red Roses, the alt tag used shall be something like,

5. Your Domain Name
Domain name is the name of your website. And the more relevant your domain name is to your actual business; better rankings are ensured for your website. Besides, it is strongly recommended that domain names contain focus from a search perspective. With exact match domain names, chances of ranking on the first page get even higher.
Note: But you might not always be able to find your exact domain name because of high competition, so even a broad match works.
6. Basic URL Structure
One of the least considered factors in SEO despite being a lot impactful, structuring of URLs is extremely important for better rankings.
Your URL structure explains the navigation pattern and the flow of your site alongside giving a hint of the content. Messy, unstructured URLs give the Search engine crawlers a hard time to understand the flow and index your site, thereby lowering your chances of ranking. We don’t want that to happen!
Following are a couple of pointers that can be used to make the URL search engine friendly:
- Avoid using extra spaces between words and characters as the automatic URL builder adds a “-” for each space
- Do not add extraneous characters ( $ @ ! * % = ? ) to your URLs
- Underscores (_) should be replaced with dash (-)
- Keep the URLs shorter and crisp
7. Ensure the landing Page has a Responsive Design
The websites need to be responsive on all screens i.e. the website needs to be mobile-friendly, tablets, desktops etc. As or 2015, Google started penalizing websites that weren’t mobile friendly and this led to the companies shifting to responsive designs and layout.
